Sonic Healthcare UK encompasses the two main entities in the UK, The Doctors Laboratory (TDL) and Health Services Laboratories (HSL). HSL is a partnership between The Doctors Laboratory (TDL), Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH). HSL was formed to provide pathology services to the NHS Trusts and has expanded further to provide services to other NHS Trusts. Over 3,500 staff work at Sonic Healthcare UK, primarily under the TDL or HSL banner.

Main duties of the job

We have an exciting opportunity for a fixed term Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our team in Special Coagulation at 60 Whitfield Street. The successful candidate must have experience and knowledge in Coagulation techniques and theory. Training experience and/or running a specialist section is desirable.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate and participate in the processing of samples for specialist coagulation by working with other Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants to ensure a smooth workflow within the Core Specialist Coagulation Laboratory.
  • Carry out and report specialist coagulation testing using a variety of manual, semi-automated and automated technology laboratory techniques (including clotting, chromogenic, ELISAs and platelet aggregometry) used to diagnose patients with bleeding and thrombotic disorders. This will require autonomy and will be carried out according to laboratory protocols.
  • Core hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with opportunities to work overtime and weekends.

Due to the nature of work that Sonic Healthcare UK undertakes, our clients require that Employees filling certain roles, need, as part of their on-boarding to complete a DBS Check. This role falls into the category of requiring a DBS check (standard).

Job responsibilities

Overall Job Purpose: To assist with the daily running of the laboratory section to which you have been assigned within the Department of Haemostasis. To assist in the performance of the routine diagnostic analytical work of the department as directed. To maintain the highest professional and technical standards in the department.

Main duties – Technical

  1. To maintain technical competence in Haemostasis.
  2. To handle, use and dispose of blood (and other body fluids or tissues) and hazardous chemicals in a safe manner.
  3. To assist in the care and maintenance of equipment and to ensure equipment is functioning correctly prior to analysis.
  4. To carry out first line equipment and method troubleshooting, advise senior Biomedical Scientist of situations requiring further action, work with Service Engineers on fault resolution.
  5. To prepare, store and use reagents required for laboratory investigations.
  6. To perform manual, semi-automated and fully-automated laboratory investigations.
  7. To measure and monitor the accuracy and imprecision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality controls procedures.
  8. To undertake preliminary fault finding and corrective action when the quality control procedures indicate loss of performance.
  9. To report to the senior Biomedical Scientist any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure.

Scientific

  1. To undertake method and laboratory instrument evaluation as directed by the Laboratory Operations Manager.
  2. To participate in research and development as directed by the Laboratory Operations Manager.
  3. To interpret first line laboratory results and take appropriate actions in line with: i. Laboratory policies and procedures for authorising results, adding approved; ii. Predefined clinically relevant comments, referring results for an expert opinion; iii. Clinical interpretation.
  4. To report results through the laboratory computer system or by telephone to medical and nursing staff when requested to do so.
  5. To inform the requester of clinically significant results.
  6. To provide approved departmental information and advice to other healthcare professionals and patients and to refer on to appropriate specialists requests for information out of their area of responsibility.
  7. To participate in clinical audits.

Training and Education

1. To be competent in the area of work for which you have supervisory responsibility.

2. To make sure that training documentation is up to date and complies with UKAS, HCPC and IBMS regulations.

3. To further be actively involved in staff meetings and seminars.

4. To maintain own personal development and attend departmental meetings as required.

5. To maintain registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and participate in a recognised CDP scheme.

6. To take an active interest and keep abreast of developments in the discipline.

7. To assist in the development of junior colleagues by assisting in the training of trainee BMS and MLA staff, and to undertake, complete and sign off all competencies associated with these grades.

8. To undertake mandatory training as per HSL requirements.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • IBMS accredited Biological Sciences degree or equivalent qualification in pathology disciplines
  • Current registration with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Specialist Diploma in a relevant discipline or equivalent
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years post HCPC experience
  • Previous experience of working in Coagulation/Haematology Laboratory
  • Previous experience of working in a Special Coagulation Laboratory
  • Good theoretical knowledge in Haemostasis
  • Demonstrate experience of working to a laboratory Quality Management system
  • Proficiency in relevant techniques
  • Experience of using a Laboratory Information System
