A defense technology consultancy in the UK is seeking a Machine Learning Research Consultant to work at the forefront of innovation for national security. This role involves exploring and developing cutting-edge technologies using AI and machine learning, while collaborating within multi-disciplinary teams. Candidates should have a strong foundation in Python and experience with frameworks like Tensorflow and PyTorch. The company offers a dynamic environment with excellent benefits and professional growth opportunities.
Breakthrough technology is vital for strengthening the UK’s Defence and Homeland Security. As a Machine Learning Consultant at Awerian, you will be at the forefront of this innovation race to defend and protect the UK from the latest technological and cyber threats.
Your work will have a real-world impact. You will explore and develop cutting‑edge technologies by working within multi‑disciplinary teams of highly educated and skilled scientists and engineers.
As a Machine Learning Research Consultant you will use your curiosity, creativity, and rigour to tackle diverse, real‑world challenges which are typically at the forefront of emerging AI/ML technologies. You will use your experience to design and deploy systems that apply machine learning to a broad range of tasks, often in novel settings, pulling together third‑party components and building elements yourself. You will research the fundamentals of models, their architectures and each stage of the machine learning pipeline. It’s a fantastically challenging, varied, and agile role.
Awerian’s wide variety of intriguing projects often bring together aspects of science, engineering and machine learning. Projects span proof‑of‑concepts through to working prototypes, providing both intellectual and practical challenges. The projects will test your ability to solve problems across the machine learning development cycle: ideation; data I/O, cleaning and preparation; rapid code prototyping and feasibility testing; designing, refining, and evaluating models; and deploying and packaging code into client‑ready demonstrators and products. The sense of job satisfaction will be tangible as you collaborate across disciplines and stretch your knowledge and capabilities into new areas of pioneering research and development.
You will hold an undergraduate degree (2:1 or above) in a relevant subject including Physics, Maths, Engineering, Computer Science, etc. Graduate degrees with demonstrable research experience or equivalent research and development experience are highly desirable. You will bring a rigorous scientific approach, independent mindset, and broad interest in developments across the machine learning field.
Ideally you will have notable experience in two or more of the above areas. Experience of, or skills required for, client‑facing (or similar) roles are highly desirable. We are keen to hear from exceptional applicants with experience in any sector.
Awerian is a defence and security technology consultancy comprising 35+ scientists and engineers. You will work at our smart and well‑equipped offices and laboratories based just outside Cambridge. Immediately you will be encouraged to share and implement your ideas as a valued member of the team, and you will benefit from our strong culture of freedom and openness.
We have a flat structure with little hierarchy, and no corporate hoops to jump through. This encourages mutual support, teamwork, and innovation. It also creates unique opportunities to develop skills in project leadership and client management to keep your professional development on track, firmly supported by our team of experts.
We are continuing our rapid growth plan, making this an exciting time to join and help to shape our future. We’re a business of individuals – however, our curiosity brings us together and it drives what we do. Whether you’re leading a project or part of a team, the whole structure of Awerian is designed to help you connect, thrive, and feel included.
