We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist/Bioinformatician, experienced in handling large multiomic datasets, to lead key analyses, support and mentor junior scientists, and curate our data repository for 12 months, covering maternity leave.

About the Role:

The work involves developing, scaling pilot analyses, creating new pipelines and tools, and optimizing existing pipelines.

What you will do:

• Design analytical pipelines and collaborate with team members to automate and scale them.
• Assist with data analysis, reporting, and contribute to publications.
• Enhance data management practices and systems.
• Develop and maintain genetic, genomic, and phenotypic data databases following best practices.
• Prepare data extracts, document data releases.
• Coordinate with research administrators and DNA pipelines team for sample prioritization and status updates.
• Manage and archive data with the team, oversee storage capacity.
• Ingest external data relevant to research goals.

About You:

You will establish best practices for analyzing genetic (WGS, WES, genotyping arrays), genomics (RNAseq, single-cell, spatial transcriptomics), and phenotypic data from thousands of participants, designing and scaling analyses, automating pipelines, and working in high-performance computing environments.

You will ensure data is uploaded to repositories, secure, and accessible to external users, and handle external datasets documentation and alignment.

You will contribute to scientific publications, collaborate actively, and mentor junior scientists.

Essential Skills:

• Degree or equivalent in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or Life Sciences.
• Experience with large-scale genetic/genomic data.
• Proficiency with relational databases (e.g., MySQL), programming in Python and R.
• Unix experience in high-performance computing.
• Experience with version control platforms (e.g., GitHub).
• Pipeline creation experience, preferably with NextFlow.
• Good organizational and prioritization skills.
• Attention to detail and accuracy.
• Effective communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in an inclusive environment.

About Us:

The Genomics of Inflammation and Immunity Group at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, led by Dr. Carl Anderson, comprises statisticians, geneticists, immunologists, computer scientists, and clinicians studying immune-mediated diseases.

You will lead analyses, develop tools, optimize pipelines, and integrate genetic and phenotypic data in a large-scale research program on immune diseases.
