Are you an enthusiastic and self-motivated band 6 Speech and Language Therapist, looking for flexible working? We have an exciting opportunity for you to be a part of a friendly and supportive SLT team by joining our staff bank at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.

The adult SLT inpatient service at the Royal Free Hospital provides specialist input for a wide-ranging number of complex aetiologies and our bank staff would work as integrated members of the MDT.

Depending on service need, you will provide assessment and management for patients within our three primary teams of Stroke/Neurology, Health Services for Elderly People and Critical Care, with opportunity to also cover Respiratory, Cardiology, Acute medicine, Renal, Hepatology, Medical Oncology, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Vascular, Liver, HPB, Urology and Infectious diseases as needed.

Our SLT team is highly skilled, running weekly Videofluoroscopy clinics, an SLT-led FEES service and are integral members of the critical care and tracheostomy weaning team. We are committed to using evidenced based practice and delivering excellent clinical outcomes.

1.As an autonomous practitioner the post holder will be responsible for the provision of specialist, evidence based SLT assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adult patients in acute and rehabilitation services.

2.This post is a rotational post in the specialty areas of Health Services for Elderly People, Acute Medicine/ MAU, Stroke and Critical Care on a 9 monthly basis. The post holder will develop their competencies within
each specialty area working within the departmental competency
framework, taking an active role in continuing professional development.

3.Deliver education and training to patients, carers and other healthcare
professionals including nursing staff, junior therapists, and assistants.

4.Undertake and present evidence-based projects and research including departmental audit in aforementioned specialty areas, suggesting practice changes, and updating resources, under the supervision of line manager and / or clinical supervisor.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1.To demonstrate specialist clinical expertise in the assessment, differential
diagnosis, treatment and management of language, communication and
swallow problems in adults with acquired disorders, providing appropriate
intervention and evaluating outcomes. To include patients with
tracheostomies and who are ventilator dependant.

2.To demonstrate specialist knowledge in this clinical area underpinned by
current evidence-based practice and outcome measures.

3.To demonstrate highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the
assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients.

4.To make appropriate differential diagnoses and specialist clinical decisions based on evidence from assessment of complex cases, seeking advice as appropriate.

5.To develop knowledge and skills within each specialty, consulting with
clinical supervisor as appropriate.

6.To apply specialist knowledge to inform sound clinical judgements/decision making for case management, developing clear care plans based on best practice.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR PATIENTS

1.To have due regard for personal safety and that of patients/carers, adhering to moving and handling regulations, restraining policies and ensuring the safe positioning of self and others.

2,To demonstrate skills in handling patients with disabilities

3.To maintain intense concentration in all aspects of patient management for prolonged periods. In particular, to monitor auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of patients communication, adapting and facilitating according to perceived patient needs

4.To be flexible to the demands of the environment including unpredictable work patterns, deadlines and frequent interruptions.

LIAISON/TEAMWORK

1.To contribute to the function of clinical teams both multi-disciplinary and uni-disciplinary by discussing own and others input around patient’s needs, ensuring a well-co-ordinated care plan.

2.To liaise and share information with health staff as appropriate, observing data protection guidelines.

3.To contribute to case conferences and multi-agency team meetings and policy development as appropriate e.g. social services and the voluntary sector.

STAFF SUPPORT

1.To supervise the work of junior SLT colleagues, assistants and volunteers, and to provide support as required.

2.To provide line management to junior therapists from other disciplines.

3.To provide emotional support for students, volunteers, and more junior speech and language therapists when distressing circumstances arise.
