About the role

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Senior Primary Design Engineer to join their Power T&D team in Newcastle. The role focuses on primary engineering design delivery for electrical substation projects up to 400kV, with support from Design Engineers. It also involves assisting the team with planning and procurement for substation project delivery.

What you'll be doing

Key accountabilities:

• Deliver designs according to customer specifications, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and legislation.
• Check and approve HV plant design deliverables such as single line diagrams, layouts, MEWP access layouts, SC force calculations, earthing designs, etc.
• Work in accordance with Health & Safety procedures and company obligations, advising on risks and mitigation measures.
• Ensure models and drawings are reviewed and approved, incorporating BIM best practices.

General Responsibilities:

• Carry out duties following company quality, health & safety, and environmental procedures.
• Deliver engineering designs on time, within budget, and to quality standards, promoting safety and sustainability.
• Function as an authorized approver of designs on contracts.

Commercial/Contract Responsibilities:

Report scope variations to the Design Manager and proceed only after approval.

Design Responsibilities:

• Identify standards and customer requirements, ensuring compliance.
• Design AIS and GIS substations up to 400kV.

Who we're looking for

Education:

• Minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; a degree is desirable.
• Member of IET (MIET); working towards CEng.

Experience:

• Experience liaising with customers and suppliers.
• Design and specification of electrical power systems.
• Proficiency in calculations, Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM360.
• Experience as HV Substation / Primary Plant Design Engineer; P&C knowledge is a plus.
