Job summary

SMT GB in Duxford, Cambridgeshire, is seeking a Workshop Engineer to diagnose, repair and maintain heavy plant equipment, ensuring machines operate safely and to high standards. You’ll join a team focused on quality workmanship and customer service.

You will service Volvo Construction Equipment and other machinery, diagnose faults across mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems, and keep accurate service records while following health, safety and environmental standards.

Qualifications

• You’ll hold a formal engineering qualification in Plant Maintenance or related discipline.
• Experience repairing heavy construction plant equipment is essential.
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions, driveline and electronics.
• Excellent fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
• Good communication and ability to work with colleagues and customers.
• Basic IT skills and high attention to detail.
• Reliable and professional approach; able to follow technical manuals.

Responsibilities

• Service, maintain and repair Volvo Construction Equipment and other machinery as required.
• Carry out repairs in line with quotations and agreed timescales, highlighting any additional work requirements.
• Diagnose faults across mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems.
• Complete service inspection reports, oil sample reports and other required documentation accurately.
• Record time and job information electronically in real time.
• Order and manage parts required to complete repairs.
• Ensure software updates are installed as new versions become available.
• Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment.
• Attend product and technical training to maintain and develop technical competence.
• Work in accordance with SMT GB's health, safety, quality and environmental standards.
