Job summary

Power Electrics is seeking an experienced Engineer to support the After Market Service Department. You will perform maintenance and repairs on customer-owned diesel generators, and oversee load bank testing, calibration and operation to meet high standards and customer requirements.

You will work with the Utilities Sector Service Manager and a wider service team to ensure workmanship, reliability and exceptional customer service while complying with quality, health & safety and environmental

Qualifications

  • Possess relevant qualifications in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience servicing, maintaining, and repairing diesel generator sets (Cummins, FG Wilson, Perkins, Volvo, Scania, Caterpillar or similar).
  • Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding abilities – ESSENTIAL.
  • Good understanding of diesel engines, alternators, generator control systems and related equipment – ESSENTIAL.
  • Experience with load banks or electrical test equipment would be advantageous – ESSENTIAL.
  • Ability to read technical drawings, wiring diagrams and service manuals – ESSENTIAL.
  • Ability to produce clear and accurate technical reports – ESSENTIAL.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned servicing, maintenance, repair and refurbishment of customer-owned generator sets in workshop.
  • Diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical and control system faults on diesel generators.
  • Prepare equipment for inspection, testing, commissioning and return to service.
  • Inspect engines, alternators, control panels and ancillary equipment.
  • Complete detailed service and fault-finding reports and maintenance docs.
  • Support load bank testing, calibration and readiness for customer projects.
  • Maintain records of servicing, testing, calibration and certification.
  • Assist with site preparation for projects and deployments.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and compliant workshop and stock control.

Job description

This role offers a great opportunity for an experienced Engineer. You will play a key role in supporting the After Market Service Department by performing maintenance and repairs on customer-owned diesel generators. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the maintenance, inspection, testing, calibration, and operation of the company’s load bank fleet, ensuring all equipment is maintained to the highest standards and available to support customer and operational requirements.

You will work closely with the Utilities Sector Service Manager and wider service team to deliver high levels of workmanship, reliability, and customer service while maintaining compliance with company quality, health and safety, and environmental standards

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned servicing, maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of customer-owned generator sets within the workshop.
  • Diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical, and control system faults on diesel-powered generating equipment.
  • Prepare customer equipment for inspection, testing, commissioning, and return to service.
  • Conduct engine, alternator, control panel, and ancillary equipment inspections.
  • Complete detailed service reports, fault-finding reports, and maintenance documentation accurately and professionally.
  • Support the repair, maintenance, testing, and operational readiness of the company’s load bank fleet.
  • Carry out load bank inspections, fault diagnosis, repairs, modifications, and routine servicing.
  • Maintain records of load bank servicing, testing, calibration, and certification where required.
  • Assist with generator and load bank preparation for customer projects and site deployments.
  • Support workshop improvement initiatives and ensure work areas are maintained in a clean, organised, and safe condition.
  • Ensure tools, test equipment, and workshop machinery are maintained and used in accordance with company procedures.
  • Assist with stock control and identification of parts required for repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Comply with all Company Health & Safety policies and procedures, ensuring safe working practices are followed at all times.
  • Maintain company standards relating to Quality Management, Environmental Management, and Occupational Health & Safety systems.
  • Actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the service department.
Skills & Experience
  • Possess a relevant qualification in either: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Diesel Engineering, Plant Engineering, City & Guilds, BTEC, NVQ or equivalent OR Have completed a recognised apprenticeship in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering OR Demonstrate proven experience servicing, maintaining, and repairing diesel generator sets, including manufacturers such as Cummins, FG Wilson, Perkins, Volvo, Scania, Caterpillar, or similar.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding abilities – ESSENTIAL
  • Good understanding of diesel engines, alternators, generator control systems, and associated auxiliary equipment – ESSENTIAL
  • Experience working with load banks or electrical test equipment would be advantageous – ESSENTIAL
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and service manuals – ESSENTIAL
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to produce clear and accurate technical reports – ESSENTIAL
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail – ESSENTIAL
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team – ESSENTIAL
  • Good customer awareness with the ability to respond effectively and professionally to customer requirements – ESSENTIAL
  • Full UK Driving Licence – ESSENTIAL
  • Previous generator industry experience – DESIRABLE
  • ECS/CSCS card holder – DESIRABLE
  • Knowledge of Deep Sea Electronics (DSE), ComAp, FGW, or similar control systems – DESIRABLE
  • Experience of load testing and generator commissioning activities – DESIRABLE
