At Severn Trent, we’re embarking on an exciting £415m project to replace 870 miles of old water pipes across the Midlands. This is the biggest investment in water infrastructure in the region in a decade, set to improve water quality, reduce leaks, and make water supply more reliable for millions of people. The new pipes installed will last up to 100 years.

We are creating new jobs across the region, based in Birmingham, Nottingham, or anywhere in between. We have opportunities for you to help shape the future of water in the Midlands.

We are looking for a Water Construction Technician to work as part of a team to successfully deliver Mains Renewal construction activities at specific sites within one of the four regions (North, South, East, West).

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Your key role as a Water Construction Technician will be to operate assets on the network on behalf of the construction team while carrying out large-scale Mains Renewal work at specific locations.

You will support the Network Construction Manager in planning and delivering Mains Renewal schemes within your area of responsibility and work alongside the Lead Operative to deliver on-site activities.

This role involves significant, large-scale construction activity on-site, including excavation, installation, testing, and commissioning of new mains and assets.

The position is crucial in delivering large-scale construction work with significant potential risks. You will be expected to deliver construction work within set budgets, working alongside the Network Control Manager.

This role requires a 42-hour work week, Monday to Friday, starting at 7:30 AM and ending at 4:30 PM, with a half-hour early finish at 4:00 PM on Fridays.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Undertake pre-site checks with the Network Construction Manager and identify and assess key assets for risk and contingency planning.
  • Communicate with Network Control at critical stages, such as valve operations connecting to trunk mains. Support the construction team with activities like pipe fusing, service laying, and overlanding.
  • Perform valving due diligence, chlorination, and sampling of mains and services following SOPs and SSOW.
  • Carry out operational activities such as flushing and cleansing mains and hydrants, and oversee the installation of pressure control valves, managing pressure, flow, and disinfection, including both low and high-risk valve operations.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

The ideal candidate will have a full driving license and preferably hold a National Water Hygiene and NRSWA certification, with significant utility industry experience.

You should have good communication skills, the ability to build successful working relationships, and experience in risk identification and opportunity recognition.

We value character traits like positivity and a caring attitude, alongside the right skills and experience.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, believing diversity enhances our learning and service to communities. We seek individuals who are proactive, committed, and eager to make a difference.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU

Working at Severn Trent offers more than just a job. You can build a career with us, supported by rewards, training, and a commitment to environmental and community well-being.

Some of our benefits include:

  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays, with options to buy or sell up to 5 days
  • Annual bonus scheme up to £1,500 based on performance
  • Enhanced pension scheme with double contributions (up to 15% when you contribute 7.5%)
  • Sharesave scheme to buy shares at a discount
  • Dedicated training through our ‘Academy’
  • Electric vehicle scheme and retail offers
  • Family-friendly policies
  • Two volunteering days per year
  • Opportunity to earn up to an additional £10,000 annually through a Mains Renewal incentive scheme
