Job summary

Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust seeks a Ward Clerk for Ward 22 Short Stay on the acute medical floor. You will provide admin and clerical support, handling patient admissions, visitor queries, telephone calls, referrals, transport and specimen requests for nursing staff.

Candidates need public-facing experience, sound IT skills and the ability to stay calm under pressure. The role is fast-paced with demanding targets and requires excellent communication with patients and colleagues.

Qualifications

• Requires NVQ Level 2/3 in Business Admin or willingness to undertake
• GCSE Maths and English at grades 4-9 or equivalent
• Public-facing experience and good IT skills are essential

Responsibilities

• Receive and welcome new patients onto the ward, checking records and ensuring notes are in order
• Welcome visitors onto the ward and refer queries to the Sister, Charge Nurse or deputy
• Answer the telephone and respond to questions or requests as appropriate
• Ensure identity bracelets are available for nursing staff
• Compile sets of blank documentation for emergency patients
• Request allied healthcare professionals, such as phlebotomy, ECG, radiography or porters, as nursing staff ask
• Make outpatient referrals as nursing staff request
• Notify Pathology of urgent blood specimens when nursing staff ask
• Request and collect notes and x-rays from departments, or deliver them when asked
• Order patient transport as nursing staff request, completing the paperwork
• Filing
• Use the Care Flow system and book appointments
