Job summary

The Pirbright Institute on a dedicated campus in Pirbright, Surrey, is seeking a Laboratory Technician to support the NVRL diagnostics team. You will perform plaque assays, sample processing, and quality-focused lab work, maintaining cell lines and handling pathogen stocks with strict biosafety standards.

Responsibilities include ELISA/PCR testing, data entry in LIMS, and on-call duties, while complying with ISO/IEC 17025 and COSHH guidelines.

Qualifications

• A BSc or equivalent in a relevant branch of biosciences.
• Minimum 1 year experience in basic lab techniques including cell culture and aseptic technique.
• Experience in maintaining cell lines and managing pathogen stocks and reagents.
• Strong organisational and communication skills including time management and record keeping.
• Awareness of COSHH, risk assessment and waste management; ISO/IEC 17025 experience is desirable.
• Experience in serological techniques and PCR.

Responsibilities

• Plaque assay for disinfectant testing and sample processing.
• Preparation and monitoring of control stocks including viruses.
• Propagation and maintenance of cell lines and biosafety compliance.
• Instrument calibration and adherence to SOPs.
• Data entry using LIMS and on-call duties.
