Job description

Location: Based in Wakefield (with some hybrid/remote working) and also occasional work from other locations across West Yorkshire

Looking for a sustainability role where you can influence, inform and report progress on strategic and delivery plans at a major organisation?

This is a new position, suitable for someone with a passion for sustainability and data analysis. You will support the Sustainability Manager with reporting against the Sustainability Plan (2026-2030) targets and in embedding sustainability in everything we do, identify improvements, and work with colleagues and partners to deliver West Yorkshire Police’s Sustainability Strategy . This will be a key role in helping us measure and articulate our progress and bring additional insight, action and capacity as we build on our successes of our sustainability journey to date.

This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate who is a good communicator, enthusiastic, professional, and with a drive to make a positive difference in an organisation of over 10,000 people, more than 80 buildings and 1,300 vehicles.

The successful applicant will have strong numerical and communication skills, and interest in supporting our Sustainability Manager as well as undertake independent work. Ample support will be provided to help you thrive and build your experience in a major organisation.

Key Duties
  • Collating and analysing data, and managing all aspects of data analysis’ processes.
  • Assisting with the preparation of progress reports and case studies, and communicating these with clarity.
  • Ensuring the relevant actions are being progressed through the working groups and all sustainability Key Performance Indicators are owned, monitored and tracked.
  • Engaging with a range of colleagues and partners, work collaboratively and build positive relationships, sharing learning and good practice.
  • Taking an active role in raising awareness about Force’s work on sustainability, internally and externally.
  • Managing a range of workstreams in a diverse and busy environment.
  • Researching and keeping abreast of topical issues, environmental legislation and good practice.

To succeed in this role, you will be expected to:

  • Be able to manage all aspects of sustainability data analysis’ processes (collection, recording, quality assurance, audits and reporting).
  • Be proactive in the evaluation of data to inform actions, decisions, priorities and monitor progress.
  • Be numerically competent being able to validate major utilities and waste consumption.
  • Lead small projects and assist in larger ones.
  • Have a working knowledge of sustainability and carbon reduction and be able to research and establish good practice and evolving developments.
  • Build an understanding of environmental compliance obligations.
  • Work independently, with partners, colleagues, and to the instruction of the Sustainability Manager.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, presentation and writing skills.
  • Manage and prioritise your time to meet expectations.
  • Have a high attention to detail.
  • Be willing and able to travel around West Yorkshire for business purposes.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline or able todemonstraterelevant work experience linked to sustainability and carbon reduction, or data analysis.
  • Good IT knowledge, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent quantitative data analysis skills anda good levelof qualitative data analysis skills.
  • Experience in collating and interpreting data to form sound and well-evidenced conclusions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, abilitytopresent and report data analysis in a concise and straightforward manner to avariety of audiences.
  • Excellent report writing and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and impart complex information, such aslargedatasets and benchmarking reports.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, statutory requirements and good practice relating to environment and sustainability.
