Job description

We’re looking for a junior to mid-weight UX Researcher who wants to work on projects that make a positive difference. You’ll be working alongside some of the world’s leading mission-driven organisations, helping them to turn ideas and knowledge into social progress.

In this role, you’ll join a small but mighty UX team, helping to ensure our digital products meet user and client goals.

Job overview

As a UX researcher, you will help craft user experiences that are intuitive and impactful.

You will leverage stakeholder and user research, information architecture, and content strategy to ensure our work is deeply rooted in a strategic understanding of client and user needs. You’ll also collaborate with your design colleagues to help refine concepts.

Once onboard you will have the opportunity to get involved in a range of diverse projects, working with clients such as Stanford University, the United Nations, the Stockholm Environment Institute, the IPCC, and the Institute for Fiscal Studies. You will create work of the highest standard that solves challenges, pushes boundaries, and drives the sector forward. And you will support colleagues across the studio to help them to do the same.

About you

Soapbox is committed to equality of opportunity and understands that including employees with diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds improves the quality and creativity of our services. We actively seek to recruit, develop, nurture, and retain talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, with varying skills and perspectives.

We’re not looking for someone with years of experience, but we expect you to understand UX design principles and how these impact UX research and strategy. Most importantly, you should be passionate about developing your understanding of UX.

Below we’ve outlined the sort of person we’re looking for. But the following isn’t a strict list of ‘must-haves’. If you think you have the right mix of skills and experience that would make you a good fit, please consider applying.

Skills and attitude:
When it comes to skills and attitude, it would be great to find someone who is:

  • Enthusiastic about contributing to our evolving processes, tools, and best practices;
  • Able to assist in the preparation and facilitation of workshops;
  • Curious about the research, policy, and advocacy clients we work with and the issues they work on;
  • Motivated and enthusiastic, with a passion for solving important problems;
  • Passionate about putting people first, designing and developing digital solutions with real users in mind;
  • Able to present ideas with clarity and passion, and to receive feedback with open-mindedness;
  • Proactive and flexible, capable of working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team;
  • Someone who combines creativity, empathy and problem-solving ability.

Experience:

We are open to applications from both junior candidates (less than 2 years experience) and mid-weight (2-5 years experience).

Joining our team as a UX researcher, you’ll need an understanding of user experience practice. Some of the things we’d love to see:

  • Confidence in conducting user research activities, including interviews, workshops, and usability testing to inform a discovery process;
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to turn qualitative and quantitative research into clear and actionable insights for clients and colleagues;
  • Familiarity with developing the information architecture of a range of websites, including site mapping, defining taxonomies and content types;
  • Knowledge of content modeling tools, such as Airtable;
  • Proficiency in creating wireframes using Figma, or other similar tools;
  • An understanding of SEO principles and techniques particularly onsite and technical SEO is desirable;
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate your thinking to clients and team members and bring them along on the journey;
  • Confident getting involved in new business proposals and pitches.

If all this sounds good to you, then do get in touch. And if you’re not quite sure you meet the criteria, then we’d still love to hear from you. Research shows that women and members of underrepresented groups tend to only apply for jobs when they believe they meet every requirement – but we believe it’s important to give everyone a fair chance. It would be great to have the opportunity to talk with you and see if there is a fit.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates who are members of underrepresented groups at Soapbox, including LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, and people from minority ethnic and religious communities.

About us

At Soapbox, we believe that our clients’ work drives progress toward a fairer, more peaceful, and more sustainable society. Helping them communicate in clearer, more imaginative ways helps inspire better policy decisions, fuels social action, and leads to a more balanced and inclusive public debate, improving outcomes for all of us.

We’re a friendly and supportive team of designers, developers, strategists, editors, and project managers. We aim to create a collaborative and inclusive environment where everyone can flourish. We seek to bring together talented people who are interested in working on challenging, impactful projects and share a genuine curiosity about the sector we work in.

When we’re not working from home, most of us work from our studio in Whitechapel, East London. We also have a studio in Bath and team members across the world. We work as one global team, collaborating across borders and time zones.

What we offer

25 days of holiday per year (plus bank holidays, Christmas shutdown, and your birthday);

Flexible, hybrid working – we ask that you attend one of our studios a minimum of two days per week;

Work from anywhere four weeks a year;

Employee Assistance Programme;

Enhanced maternity and paternity pay;

Generous company sick pay;

Matched pension contributions;

Bike to Work Scheme;

Additional long-service rewards;

Personal development and progression plans with a learning & development budget;

Health Cash Plan (with the option to enhance or add partner after 3 years);

Quarterly company get-togethers including our annual summer and winter socials;

Regular employee well-being perks such as bring your dog to the office, store and online discounts, barista-quality coffee, and free fruit and snacks.

Think you’d be a good fit? We’d love to hear from you. Get in touch with us at jobs@designbysoapbox.com.

We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis.

We will acknowledge all applications and contact shortlisted applicants. Unfortunately, given the volume of applications we receive, it is not possible for us to give feedback to candidates who do not get beyond this stage.
