Job summary

Mencap Training Academy is recruiting a Tutor/HLTA to join the Supported Internship programme in the UK, delivering education and work-readiness to young people with learning disabilities, difficulties, and/or autism. You will create engaging lessons and support life skills development within a collaborative team.

You will deliver English and Maths up to Level 2, and the HLTA pathway offers support to gain a Level 5 qualification post-probation.

Qualifications

  • Qualified teacher or HLTA with willingness to pursue Level 5.
  • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent) at grade 4/C or above.
  • Experience supporting learners with learning disabilities, learning difficulties, and/or autism.
  • Experience delivering functional skills in English and Maths up to Level 2.
  • Proven ability to deliver against targets and KPIs.

Responsibilities

  • Create dynamic and engaging lessons that integrate English and Maths with real-world employability skills.
  • Develop essential life skills to help learners navigate their communities with confidence.
  • Design innovative and engaging lessons that spark curiosity and foster learning.
  • Collaborate with team members to provide holistic support and help learners secure paid employment.
  • Deliver accredited functional skills in English and Maths to prepare learners for future success.
  • Provide dedicated planning time to enable high-quality delivery and administration.

Job description

Do you have a genuine passion for empowering young people with learning disabilities? Are you a qualified teacher or Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)? Do you have a creative flair for engaging learners? Then this is the perfect opportunity for you! Join our vibrant Supported Internship programme in the Black Country! We are recruiting for 1 x full time (37.5 hours/week) Tutor/HLTA to be part of a supportive team dedicated to helping young people with learning disabilities, learning difficulties, and/or autism access the world of work. Mencap's Internships combines education and work experience to prepare our learners for employment. As a Tutor you will focus on the delivery of the educational element of Supported Internships programmes to include employability skills, functional skills English & Maths, from Entry level to Level 2. If you are a Higher level Teaching Assistant we will support you to gain a level 5 qualification. What will you be doing? Inspire Young Minds: Create dynamic and engaging lessons that seamlessly integrate English and math into real-world employability skills. Develop Essential Life Skills: Equip learners with practical life skills to navigate their communities with confidence and independence. Think Outside the Box: Design innovative and fun lessons that spark curiosity and foster a love of learning. Collaborate for Success: Work closely with team members to provide holistic support and help learners secure paid employment. Deliver Accredited Qualifications: Teach and assess accredited functional skills in English and Maths to prepare learners for future success. Enjoy Dedicated Planning Time: We'll provide you with a full day each week to focus on planning and administrative tasks so you can deliver the best possible support to your learners. Key Requirements
  • A recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, CertEd, DTLLS) is preferred. However, candidates with a Level 3 qualification or HLTA status and willingness to undertake a Level 5 qualification post-probation will be considered.
  • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent) at grade 4/C or above.
Experience
  • Experience in supporting individuals with learning disabilities, learning difficulties, and/or autism.
  • Experience in delivering functional skills in English and Maths up to Level 2.
  • Proven ability to deliver against targets and KPI's.
  • Experience of working with a diverse range of learners.
  • Strong classroom management and behaviour management skills.
Desirable
  • Experience in delivering functional skills in English and math.
  • Experience working in a supported internship setting.
  • Knowledge of employment-related skills and training.
Personal Qualities
  • Passionate about supporting young people with SEN.
  • Creative and innovative approach to teaching and learning.
