Job description

We are looking to appoint a junior clinical fellow based at Royal London Hospital in the Department of surgical Gynaecological Oncology. The post is initially for six months, with a possible extension to twelve months. The post holders will play an integral role working in the multi-disciplinary team in our award-winning Cancer Centre of excellence. The post holder will work with the team of 6 Consultant Gynaecological Oncologists, 3 sub-specialty fellows, 2 research clinical fellows and 8 junior clinical fellows including this post. The post holders will actively contribute to the on-going research in the department.

Surgical gynaecological oncology inpatients are managed on the surgical ward. There are 7 all day operating lists 4 days a week (3 x 2 parallel list, 1 x single list). Many cases are operated on laparoscopically and robotically which facilitates rapid patient turnover. We also perform ultra-radical ovarian cancer surgery. The inpatient service is supported by dedicated ward staff with expertise in gynaecological oncology nursing and physiotherapy as well as a team of clinical nurse specialists. The post-holders will be expected to liaise with the Medical, Clinical Oncology and Palliative Medicine teams and to see inpatient referrals.

Main duties of the job

This post will not count towards general Obstetrics and Gynaecology or surgical training and so would be suitable for a surgical or Obstetrics and gynaecology trainee.

Opportunities within the PostWe anticipate the post holders will be able to undertake training to achieve the following skills in Surgical Gynaecological Oncology:

  • Work in a Multidisciplinary Team with close association with colleagues in the cancer centre.
  • Ensure effective and efficient clinical service and access for women with suspected gynaecological cancers.
  • Have a good understanding of gynaecological cancers and their treatment.
  • Be clinically competent at recognising symptoms and presentations of gynaecological cancers.
  • Understanding management of gynaecological cancers in accordance with National recommendations.
  • Develop basic and intermediate surgical skills.
  • Be able to undertake audit projects and present at departmental, national and international meetings.
