Critical Care Fellow posts in the Department of Perioperative Medicine

Start date: August 6th, 2025

Applicants from any anaesthetic, emergency/acute medical, or surgical background are welcome.

Minimum requirements include training and experience consistent with FY2 or higher.

The hospital features fifteen operating theatres, including two laminar flow orthopaedic theatres, specialist Ophthalmic and ENT theatres, and two theatres in the maternity unit.

Main duties of the job

Critical Care is provided across two units: ICU 1, a 9-bedded unit refurbished in December 2022, and ICU 2, an 8-bedded unit opened in January 2017 after a £2.3 million refurbishment. The units handle approximately 800-900 critical care admissions annually.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Post holders will have opportunities to work in both theatres and critical care, allowing anaesthetic professionals to maintain their skills and others to learn new skills in a supportive environment. There will also be involvement in Local Quality Improvement Projects. The role operates on a 1:8 on-call rota. All appointments are extendable by mutual agreement.

Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent with current Full GMC registration and ALS certification
  • FRCA, MRCP, MRCS, MCEM, or the first part of any postgraduate qualification listed above
  • APLS, ATLS
Experience
  • Training and experience consistent with FY2 or higher
  • Experience teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
  • Formal training in teaching methods

  • Ability to work effectively in a team
