About the role

We seek a motivated, collaborative Senior / Principal Transport Planner for our Transport Policy & Solutions team. You will work on projects impacting sustainability and transport efficiency.

The team focuses on research, planning, and evaluation of initiatives to optimize transport networks, support carbon reduction, air quality, safety, and quality of life.

We develop policies and strategies for governments, industry, and communities, covering transport, mobility, economic development, spatial planning, digitisation, and decarbonisation, ensuring future-proof decisions.

With political, economic, and environmental shifts, long-term planning is crucial. We partner with agencies at all levels to navigate complexities, offering pragmatic, evidence-based solutions that embrace uncertainty.

Our planners balance creativity with practicality, responding to local needs, supporting economic growth, and engaging stakeholders to build consensus and advocate for change.

Requirements
Main Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
  • Maintain client relationships and enhance brand awareness.
  • Develop proposals as a key team member.
  • Provide constructive feedback and deliver high-quality technical work efficiently.
  • Take responsibility for career development and project delivery.
  • Share knowledge and collaborate across teams.
  • Support technical, analytical, strategic, and policy advice to clients.
  • Undertake technical analysis, report writing, and presentations.
  • Manage small to medium projects or major workstreams.
  • Assist business development in the UK and internationally.
  • Coach and develop junior team members.
  • Contribute to technical discipline development activities.
Principal Consultant (PC) Responsibilities:
  • Lead proposal development and manage client relationships.
  • Build new relationships through profile raising and business development.
  • Refine Steer’s offerings to meet client needs.
  • Lead teams and projects to ensure effective performance.
  • Manage projects to achieve commercial outcomes.
  • Provide strategic, commercial, and technical advice, especially in rail industry and stakeholder engagement.
  • Lead report writing and presentations, coordinating technical input.
  • Manage work streams with supervision, applying best practices.
  • Mentor and role-model for junior staff.
  • Develop personal expertise aligned with client needs.
