JT Recruit Ltd on behalf of our client is looking for an experienced Transport Planner to join our Derby operation. You will plan and coordinate daily transport movements, allocate vehicles and drivers, and ensure operations run smoothly in a fast-paced environment.

The role offers a Monday–Friday pattern with start times 05:00, 07:00, 10:00 or 12:00, a 40-hour week, and a salary up to £35,000 depending on experience.

Qualifications

• Prior experience in transport planning or logistics.
• Understanding of vehicle/driver planning.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to stay calm under pressure and maintain attention to detail.
• Knowledge of driver hours and transport compliance is a plus.
• Experience with route planning software is beneficial.

You’ll play an important role in the day-to-day transport operation, ensuring journeys are planned effectively, resources are utilised efficiently and customer requirements are consistently met.

The Role

As a Transport Planner, your responsibilities will include:

• Planning and coordinating daily transport movements in line with customer and operational requirements.
• Allocating vehicles and drivers efficiently to maximise utilisation and service levels.
• Monitoring transport activity and proactively managing delays, changes and operational issues.
• Communicating with drivers, customers, colleagues and external partners to ensure smooth operations.
• Ensuring transport plans comply with relevant legislation, company procedures and customer requirements.
• Making real-time decisions to resolve operational challenges and minimise disruption.
• Monitoring vehicle utilisation, route efficiency and transport performance.
• Maintaining accurate planning records and operational documentation.
• Working closely with the wider transport and operations teams to achieve service and performance targets.
• Identifying opportunities to improve planning processes, efficiency and customer service.
• Supporting continuous improvement initiatives across the transport operation.
• Building strong working relationships with drivers and colleagues at all levels.

About You

We’re looking for someone who is confident, organised and able to make effective decisions in a busy transport environment.

You’ll ideally have:

• Previous experience in transport planning, logistics, fleet operations or a similar role.
• A good understanding of transport operations and vehicle/driver planning.
• Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
• Strong communication and problem-solving abilities.
• The ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• A proactive approach and willingness to take ownership.
• Knowledge of driver hours, transport legislation and compliance would be advantageous.
• Experience using transport management systems or route-planning software would be beneficial.
