Job summary

Biffa is seeking a Transport Manager to efficiently lead a fleet of 45+ vehicles at the Southampton Depot and support day‑to‑day Traffic Office operations. You will ensure health and safety, environmental and operator licence compliance while delivering first‑class customer service.

The role requires leadership of dispatchers and drivers, managing KPI performance, and driving cost control and operational efficiency across UK activities.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in traffic or logistics management within multi‑shift environments.
• Strong understanding of transport, environmental and health and safety legislation, lean methodology and KPIs.
• International CPC with commercial acumen and planning ability.

Responsibilities

• Lead dispatchers, drivers and operatives; review depot KPIs and drive improvements in service, safety and profitability.
• Oversee vehicle operations, ensure safe use, wheel security and gross weight compliance; coordinate with fleet team.
• Ensure compliance with transport and environmental legislation; manage third‑party insurance claims.
• Support cost control initiatives and identify opportunities to reduce costs and meet budget.
• Enforce Health and Safety procedures and review near‑miss reports to maintain service quality.
• Complete administrative tasks including worksheets and tachograph records.
• Build strong relationships with internal and external customers through proactive communication.

The Transport Manager will efficiently and effectively manage a fleet of 45+ vehicles at our Southampton Depot.

The role will also assist with managing the day-to-day operations of the Traffic Office, ensuring health and safety, environmental and operator licence compliance, while delivering first-class customer service.

Your Core Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and clear work instructions to traffic dispatchers, drivers and operatives, review depot KPIs and drive improvements in service, safety and profitability.
• Manage vehicle operations, ensuring vehicles are used safely, wheel security requirements are met and gross weight limits are adhered to, while liaising with the fleet team to ensure seamless operations.
• Ensure adherence to transport and environmental legislation, including the management of third-party insurance claims.
• Support cost control initiatives, drive operational efficiency and identify opportunities to reduce costs and exceed budget expectations.
• Enforce Health and Safety procedures, including near-miss reporting and emergency procedures, and review near-miss reports to maintain a first-class customer experience.
• Complete all role-related administrative tasks, including worksheets and tachograph records.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external customers through proactive and effective communication.

Our Essential Requirements

• Proven experience in traffic or logistics management, including resource management, cost control and operational leadership within unionised, multi-shift environments.
• In-depth understanding of transport, environmental and health and safety legislation, with strong knowledge of lean methodology and KPIs.
• International CPC, strong commercial acumen, excellent communication and planning abilities.
• Familiarity with the local area and willingness to travel for business needs across the UK.
