Job summary

Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is seeking a reliable Driver for the Transport Department. The role is based at Pinderfields Hospital, supporting Pontefract and Dewsbury sites as needed.

You will safely drive Trust vehicles, transport patients, staff, equipment and documents, and assist with urgent and ad hoc requests while upholding health and safety standards. A full clean UK driving licence is essential.

Qualifications

  • Full clean driving licence.

  • Able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to meet Trust insurance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Safely driving a range of Trust vehicles, including cars, vans and light goods vehicles, in accordance with road traffic legislation and Trust policies.
  • Transporting patients, staff, medical equipment, supplies, case notes and other essential hospital items across Trust sites and throughout the Yorkshire region.
  • Collecting and delivering pathology specimens, blood products, pharmacy items, legal specimens and internal/external mail, ensuring all handling and documentation procedures are followed.
  • Undertaking scheduled transport runs between Trust sites, GP surgeries and neighbouring hospitals, together with responding to urgent and ad hoc transport requests.
  • Providing cover for the Mail Driver when required.
  • Supporting specialist transport requests, including transfer of organs and tissue samples, maintaining professionalism and sensitivity.
  • Loading, unloading and moving heavy or bulky equipment using safe manual handling techniques (training provided).
  • Carrying out routine vehicle checks and ensuring vehicles are maintained in a safe, clean and roadworthy condition.
  • Maintaining communication with the Transport Office using Trust-approved hands-free devices.
  • Adapting to changing service demands with duties and priorities adjusted at short notice by the Transport Co-ordinator.
  • Participating in a rota covering weekends and Bank Holidays as required.

About The Role

We are looking for a reliable and motivated Driver to join our busy Transport Department. The role is primarily based at Pinderfields Hospital, with responsibility for supporting services across our Pontefract and Dewsbury hospital sites when required.

Role

This is a varied and important role within the Trust, helping to ensure the smooth running of hospital services through the safe and timely transportation of:

  • Medical equipment
  • Case notes and clinical records
  • Patients
  • Supplies and other hospital items
The Successful Candidate Will
  • Hold a full, clean UK driving licence
  • Have previous driving experience
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of health and safety responsibilities
  • Be flexible, as occasional short notice changes to work patterns may be required to meet service needs
  • Have good communication skills and a professional, courteous manner
It Would Be Advantageous If You Have
  • Experience driving a range of vehicles in a work environment
  • Good knowledge of the local area
  • Experience working with members of the public

Main duties

As a Driver within our Transport Department, you will play a vital role in supporting patient care and the smooth running of hospital services by providing a safe, reliable and responsive transport service across the Trust.

Your Duties Will Include

  • Providing cover for the Mail Driver when required.
  • Supporting specialist transport requests, including the transfer of organs, tissue samples, biopsies and occasional mortuary services, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and sensitivity.
  • Loading, unloading and moving heavy or bulky equipment using safe manual handling techniques (training will be provided).
  • Carrying out routine vehicle checks and ensuring vehicles are maintained in a safe, clean and roadworthy condition.
  • Maintaining communication with the Transport Office using Trust-approved hands-free communication devices.
  • Adapting to changing service demands, with duties and priorities adjusted at short notice by the Transport Co-ordinator.
  • Participating in a rota covering weekends and Bank Holidays as required.
