Job summary

Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Teaching Trust invites applications for a Pharmacy Support Worker - Higher Level to join our Medicines Optimisation team at Pinderfields Hospital. You will work closely with ward-based clinical pharmacy staff to ensure medicines are safe, timely, and accurately documented on the electronic prescribing system.

The role requires NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services (or willingness to achieve it within 12–15 months) and experience in a pharmacy setting.

Qualifications

  • NVQ2 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent (This training is required of all Pharmacy support staff by the Pharmaceutical Society)
  • Reasonable Standard of Education particularly in Maths, English and Science

Responsibilities

  • Supporting patients directly, reviewing medicines brought to hospital, ensuring safety and accuracy for admission and discharge on the electronic prescribing system
  • Ordering medication through the electronic prescribing system to prevent missed doses
  • Working with pharmacy colleagues and ward staff to ensure smooth service
  • Dispensing medication on the ward for discharge and counselling patients on treatments
  • Transferring medication between wards to support continuity of care
  • Providing support to nursing staff with medication queries and ordering needs
  • Contributing to staff development by supporting training of Pharmacy Support Workers, Trainee Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Technicians, and Pharmacists

About The Role

We’re excited to offer a fantastic opportunity to join the Medicines Optimisation team at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Teaching Trust as a Pharmacy Support Worker - Higher Level. In this role, you will work closely with our wardbased, clinical pharmacy team to help ensure patients receive their medications safely, efficiently and on time. You will be joining a progressive, forwardthinking Pharmacy department where innovation and teamwork are at the heart of what we do. We’re a friendly and supportive team, committed to helping you settle into the role and develop your skills for the future.

We are looking for someone who has either successfully completed an NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services or is willing to work to gain this qualification within 15 months of employment. Ideally you will have experience in a pharmacy setting, either in community or hospital. We would like you to have a positive, proactive attitude and genuine passion for patient care, a strong attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to manage a busy workload whilst working both independently and as part of a team. You will also need to be confident and have clear communication skills.

The successful applicant, unless they already hold the required NVQ2, will be required to undertake and successfully complete the NVQ Level 2 Pharmacy Services qualification (provided by Bradford College) within 12-15 months of appointment as a condition of the post.

This post is based at Pinderfields Hospital, but you may be required to work at other sites within the Trust as needed, to support service levels.

There will be regular weekend and Bank Holiday working on a rota basis.

Interviews will take place at Pinderfields Hospital.

Main duties
Role
  • Supporting patients directlyreviewing any medicines they have brought to hospital with them, ensuring they are safe to use during admission, confirming supplies for discharge, and accurately documenting details on the electronic prescribing system.
  • Maintaining safe and timely care by ordering medication through the electronic prescribing system to help prevent missed doses during a patient’s stay.
  • Working collaboratively with pharmacy colleagues and ward staff at all levels to help ensure the smooth and effective running of the service.
  • Dispensing medication on the ward for discharge, supporting timely patient flow, and assisting the pharmacy team with counselling patients on newly prescribed treatments.
  • Transferring medication between wards when required to support continuity of care.
  • Providing support to nursing staff, helping them with medication queries and ordering needs.
  • Contributing to staff development by supporting the training of Pharmacy Support Workers, Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Technicians, and Trainee and Foundation Pharmacists.
Qualifications
Essential person specification requirements
  • NVQ2 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent (This training is required of all Pharmacy support staff by the Pharmaceutical Society)

Experience
  • Experience in a Pharmacy dispensary (NHS or Retail sector).
  • Experience dealing with patients/customers in a busy environment.

  • Physically able to perform the duties of the post e.g. work on wards throughout the hospital, access stock from high and low shelving and transport medicines between wards
