Job summary

Northern in Carlisle is hiring a Trainee Train Conductor to join our Operations team. You will start on a basic salary during a structured training period and progress to a higher annual salary upon successful completion, with overtime and a comprehensive benefits package.

As a Train Conductor, you will check tickets, assist passengers, manage onboard safety, and communicate clearly with the control room. The role requires flexibility for evenings, nights, weekends and travel to training sites

Qualifications

• Exceptional communication skills and customer service orientation.
• Ability to handle and defuse conflicts with effective resolution strategies.
• Self-discipline and ability to work independently.
• Ability to learn and retain safety information and operate under rules and regulations.
• Strong time management and punctuality to ensure trains depart on schedule.

Responsibilities

• Train Operations: Coordinate with Drivers and Operational Teams to keep trains running on time.
• Customer Assistance: Help passengers on/off, check tickets, provide information and answer inquiries.
• Safety & Compliance: Enforce safety rules, manage door procedures, inspect systems and respond to incidents.
• Fare Collection: Collect fares, validate tickets and tackle fare evasion.
• Communication: Update passengers on delays or disruptions and relay important information.
• Reporting: Maintain records of counts, ticket sales and incident reports.
• Customer Service: Deliver professional service and handle complaints to ensure a positive journey.
