Job summary

Guernsey Electricity Limited seeks a Trainee Distribution Engineer to perform distribution operational engineering across fault restoration, maintenance and asset replacement projects. You will work in varied settings, including on-site and on roadways, with a focus on reliability and safety.

Progress toward becoming a Distribution Engineer while supporting HV switching initiatives and asset data management.

Qualifications

• Progress toward a formal safety qualification (IOSH/NEBOSH).
• Experience with distribution systems.
• Ability to communicate and manage people effectively.

Responsibilities

• Carry out fault finding, investigation, repairs and modifications to the conveyance and supply systems to ensure reliability of all equipment
• Arrange and carry out distribution maintenance activities
• Delivers asset replacement projects on the distribution network
• Working towards becoming a full Distribution Engineer
• To undertake system related projects, including managing project work on the power station site and on the distribution system, to improve reliability and efficiency of supply and in accordance with the appropriate industry standards
• Working towards carrying out High and Medium voltage switching and make safe apparatus for the issue and cancelling of safety documents
• Check details on site of new and existing substations and input data into the plant database for the purpose of maintaining accurate records of plant assets
• Communicate with developers, contractors, local authorities, and legal professionals for the purpose of projects, outages and road works
• Has a high level of Health & Safety responsibility and works within the company’s Health and Safety policies and procedures, also supervises and coaches on-site staff in Health and Safety matters
• Participate in a compulsory formal standby rota

Job description

Trainee Distribution Engineer

Description

To carry out all distribution operational engineering activities across various work streams including but not limited to fault restoration and repair, maintenance, and asset replacement projects.

Work is carried out in a variety of environments, in office, or on site, and on the public roadways in all weathers. Reasonable fitness is required for on-site work and the carrying of heavy test equipment. This role acts as a key interface between Distribution and Asset Management, ensuring day to day delivery of project work and work programmes.

Key Responsibilities

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• Working toward a qualification in HNC/HND in electrical and electronics or similar
• At least 5 years post training experience of the Distribution systems
• Working towards a formal safety qualification from a recognised institution e.g. IOSH – Managing Safely or NEBOSH
• Working toward becoming a Distribution Authorised Person (AP) under the GE Safety Rules
• Preferably a Distribution Control Person (CP), or working towards
• Must be self-motivated to agree and deliver against defined output targets
• Good business sense and an understanding of contract procedures
• Good interpersonal skills
• The post holder has a duty to keep up to date with industry practice and new technologies
• Demonstrates a current knowledge of the functional structure of Guernsey Electricity, its mission, objectives, strategies, and critical success factors
• Ability to communicate and manage people effectively; continually improving the performance of direct and indirect reports by providing feedback, mentoring and coaching
