Job summary

Guernsey Electricity Limited is seeking a Shift Technician to supervise and operate the generating plant, perform planned and unplanned maintenance, and support plant safety on a 24-hour rotating shift basis in Guernsey.

The ideal candidate will have mechanical or electrical craft expertise, report faults, and work toward certification as a Competent Person under our Safety Rules.

Qualifications

• Strong mechanical aptitude with knowledge of station systems.
• Ability to perform planned and unplanned maintenance.
• Ability to report faults or abnormalities on the plant.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and operate the generating plant to ensure security of supplies.
• Prepare generators for operation and undertake shutdown procedures to safeguard the plant and ensure availability.
• Assist with both planned and unplanned maintenance activities on the plant and equipment.
• Undertake standard routine operations and procedures to maintain the plant in operable condition.
• Assist the Shift Engineer with any aspect of safe plant operation and systems testing.
• Comply with Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities and Data Protection.
• Interchange of duties as required.

Shift Technician

Department: Generation

Description

To supervise and operate the generating plant and auxiliaries, to undertake designated planned and unplanned maintenance on the plant and equipment.

The Shift Technician is part of a team comprising a Shift Engineer and a Control Room Operator working 24 hour rotating shifts responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the generation plant.

Operation and maintenance duties are diverse and are split between the generating stations. The post holder requires a good general mechanical aptitude and will have a competent knowledge of station systems to ensure their safety and the safety of other staff on the site.

Due to varying levels of power import and associated variations in patterns of local generation, shift workload may vary throughout the year. Flexibility in the type of work as a consequence of these variations undertaken is required.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and operate the generating plant to ensure security of supplies.
• Prepare generators for operation and undertake shutdown procedures to safeguard the plant and ensure availability.
• To assist with both planned and unplanned maintenance activities on the plant and associated equipment.
• To undertake standard routine operations and procedures as required to maintain the plant in an operable condition.
• Assist the Shift Engineer with any aspect of safe plant operation and systems testing.
• Be aware of and comply with local legislation, specifically related to Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities and Data Protection.
• Such other duties as may be allocated and interchange of duties as required.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• Qualified mechanical or electrical craftsperson, or equivalent demonstrable experience, with a sound understanding of complex interconnected plant systems.
• To perform effectively as a Shift Technician, the post holder must develop a thorough knowledge of safe working practices.
• The ability to report faults or abnormalities on the plant.
• Must become certified as ‘Competent Person’ within the Guernsey Electricity Electrical & Mechanical Safety Rules.
• Demonstrate a current knowledge of the functional structure of Guernsey Electricity, its mission, objectives, strategies, and critical success factors.
