Job summary

Freightliner Group Ltd in the UK is seeking a Train Driver to operate trains safely under Railway Group Standards and Freightliner requirements. You will be responsible for routine checks, route knowledge updates, and reporting any safety concerns to the Signalman and Control room.

Essential qualifications include PTS, CoC, and HABD training, with induction and fire training locally. The role requires vigilance, adherence to signals, and delivery of reliable rail services with a strong safety

Qualifications

  • Essential rail safety and regulatory qualifications required for train driving.
  • Active certifications including PTS, CoC and HABD training are required.
  • Induction and local fire training are expected.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and report for duty at the directed time and place.
  • Safely move traction in accordance with rules and regulations.
  • Observe signals and report irregularities promptly.
  • Carry out emergency procedures and HABD examinations when required.
  • Maintain route knowledge and uphold safety documentation.

Job description

1 PURPOSE OF JOB

1.1 To Drive trains in accordance with Rules & Regulations, Competency Based Standards for Train Driving and Freightliner’s Defensive Driving Policy.

2 PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES
  • 2.1 Responsible for attending and reporting for duty at the time and place directed, ensuring you are physically fit to carry out the duties of a Train Driver.
  • 2.2 Responsible for unsupervised safe movement of Traction.
  • 2.3 Responsible for absorbing and retaining knowledge of traction, routes, rules and regulations, and operating notices.
  • 2.4 Be able to act and adjust driving technique accordingly to suit prevailing conditions i.e. weather, rail conditions.
  • 2.5 Be vigilant in observing all signals applicable to train movements and immediately report any irregularities to the Signalman concerned.
  • 2.6 Should any delay occur, an explanation should be sought from the Signalman concerned in order that relevant people receive up to date information.
  • 2.7 Responsible for reporting to Network Rail by the most expeditious means which is normally to the controlling signalman any safety of the line incident that action may be taken and protection may be put in place.
  • 2.8 Carry out emergency procedures when required including initial HABD examinations (including use of the ’Templestick’).
  • 2.9 Sign, be in possession of and read all notices and publications affecting our Traincrew Route Knowledge. Maintain and update publications as required for Traction and Route Knowledge and for the safe running of trains.
  • 2.10 Wear full uniform and safety clothing as supplied.
  • 2.11 Respond to service faults and failures reporting as necessary to Freightliner Control and/or Help Line.
  • 2.12 Cover Standards Managers position as and when required (ref to standards Manager JD)
  • 2.13 Undertake other duties as directed by the Supervisor or Manager
RESPONSIBILITIES

1) SAFETY OF THE LINE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • 1.1 Operate trains in a safe and proper manner in accordance with Railway Group Standards and Freightliner requirements.
  • 1.2 Be fully conversant with all current operating rules, regulations and notices.
  • 1.3 Carry out initial HABD’s Examinations.

2) STATUTORY DUTIES UNDER:

  • 2.1 Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 et seq.
  • 2.2 Transport and Work Act 1992.

3) PRINCIPAL SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • 3.1 Maintain vigilance when driving, taking appropriate action at signals etc.
  • 3.2 Adjust driving technique in accordance with prevailing conditions e.g weather, speed restrictions.
  • 3.3 Take prompt, appropriate action to ensure safety of people and equipment in and out of course situations.
4) SPECIFIC QUALIFICATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:

ESSENTIAL

  • 4.1.1 PTS
  • 4.1.2 Current Rules and Regulations CoC.
  • 4.1.3 Drivers Assessment.
  • 4.2.1 Induction - local
  • 4.2.2 Fire training - local
  • 4.2.3 RGS 3251
  • 4.2.4 Initial HABD Examination course.

DESIRABLE

  • 4.3.1 NVQ - Train Driving
  • 4.3.2 First Aid.

5) PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

  • 5.1 HV Vest
  • 5.2 Safety Footwear
  • 5.3 Gloves
  • 5.4 Wet Weather Clothing
  • 5.5 Hand lamp
  • 5.6 Safety eyewear (prescription where required)

6) SAFETY DOCUMENTATION:

  • 6.1 Appropriate Rules & Regulations
  • 6.2 Local Working Instructions
  • 6.3 Track Safety Handbook
  • 6.4 Working Manual for Rail Staff (white, pink, green pages).
  • 6.5 Traincrew manual publications as appropriate.
  • 6.6 Access to Statutory documentation as listed in Section 2, and other relevant publications held at Admin Office.
  • 6.7 Safety Critical Work Regulations Identity Card.
  • 6.8 Templestick.
  • 6.9 iPad
