Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs
  • Experience in education, youth work, residential care, mental health support or similar settings desirable
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice and therapeutic approaches advantageous
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to remain calm, patient and resilient in challenging situations
  • Genuine passion for supporting vulnerable children and young people
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong organisational skills and adaptability
  • Empathetic, proactive and reflective approach to supporting pupils
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
  • Two recent education or child-based references

Responsibilities

  • Provide therapeutic and pastoral support to pupils with SEMH needs within and outside the classroom
  • Build positive relationships to support emotional wellbeing and engagement in learning
  • Work with teaching staff and pastoral teams to implement individual support strategies and interventions
  • Support pupils in developing emotional regulation, resilience, social skills and self-confidence
  • Assist with the delivery of tailored learning activities and interventions to meet individual needs
  • Promote positive behaviour through restorative and trauma-informed approaches
  • Support pupils with challenging behaviours in a calm, consistent and supportive manner
  • Encourage pupil independence and strategies for managing emotions and behaviour effectively
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, wellbeing and behavioural development
  • Create a safe, nurturing and structured learning environment
  • Support pupils during unstructured times, including break and lunchtime periods
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, parents, carers and external agencies to support pupil development
  • Contribute to EHCPs where applicable
  • Participate in training, meetings and professional development opportunities
  • Promote safeguarding and pupil welfare at all times
  • Uphold the setting’s values and commitment to supporting vulnerable learners
