Job summary

HARLOW COLLEGE is seeking an enthusiastic technician to join the Engineering team, supporting practical lessons in the Engineering Centre and assisting with small-scale industrial links. You will prepare machinery and materials, support teachers during demonstrations, and help learners in workshops and classrooms while ensuring a clean, safe work environment.

The role offers opportunities to work with industry-standard equipment, develop practical skills, and contribute to health and safety

Responsibilities

  • Preparing machinery, tools, materials and equipment for practical lessons.

  • Assisting with the day-to-day running of workshops & labs and maintaining equipment.
  • Ensuring health and safety practices are followed in workshops.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and talented member of staff to join our growing Engineering team at Harlow College. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills while supporting and inspiring the next generation by working in Further Education. Working in a vibrant and positive learning environment, you will play a key role in supporting the teaching of practical activities in our Engineering Centre and working on small scale commercial activities linking teaching to industry directly.

In 2017 Harlow College invested £11 million in our ‘Harlow Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering Centre’ (HAMEC) from which we now deliver training to our students. We are lucky to have industry standard DMG Mori machinery including a 3-axis EcoMill, a 5-axis EcoTurn, a 5-axis DMU 50 and a 5-axis mill turn NLX1500, alongside a brand-new Mechatronics laboratory in our Institute of Technology and a brand-new Electrical Installation workshop.

The technician role includes; Preparing machinery, tools, materials and equipment for practical lessons. Supporting teachers during practical engineering activities and demonstrations. Providing individual support to learners during workshop and classroom activities. Assisting with the operation and day-to-day running of the workshops & labs. Maintaining, checking and organising engineering machinery, tools and equipment. Supporting the safe use of CNC and conventional engineering equipment. Assisting with the manufacture and preparation of components for teaching activities. Assisting with stock control, ordering materials and maintaining workshop consumables. Ensuring workshops and equipment are maintained in a clean, safe and professional condition. Promoting good working practices and ensuring that Health and Safety requirements are followed. Supervising learners and helping them develop safe and professional engineering practices.

What we are looking for:
  • An NVQ Level 3 or equivalent, qualification
  • Level 2 Maths and English (or equivalent).
  • Practical engineering experience, ideally within machining, manufacturing, maintenance, mechatronics or a related engineering environment is preferred.
  • An understanding of engineering workshop Health and Safety.
  • Good practical and organisational skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with young people and colleagues.
  • The ability to work independently while also being part of a wider teaching and support team.
  • You don’t need to have a qualification in teaching or assessing, just a passion for Engineering, strong communication skills and a willingness to train on the job.
