National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) is seeking an Operational Team Leader to guide a 20-strong Craft team delivering a safe, reliable electricity network in East Wales from Cardiff or Swansea. You’ll drive safe, efficient delivery of major projects, coordinate work, and ensure training, authorisations and performance management are in place.

Regular travel across the area is required. As a visible leader, you’ll uphold health and safety policies and manage performance through 1:1s,

Qualifications

  • Experience in leading safety-critical or regulated teams.
  • Strong data interpretation to identify performance trends.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for an Operational Team Leader to join our Major Projects team, leading a skilled team of approximately 20 Craft colleagues delivering a safe, reliable electricity network across the East Wales region.

Based from Cardiff or Swansea, you’ll play a key role in driving the safe, efficient and productive delivery of our major projects programme. You’ll coordinate programmes of work, maximise team performance and efficiency, and ensure your people have the right training, development and authorisations to succeed. As a visible and supportive leader, you’ll also manage individual performance through regular 1:1s, while ensuring all work is delivered safely and compliantly in line with our Health & Safety policies.

As this is a crucial role to help drive forward performance and give our large teams the support they need in the field, you’ll need to be depot‑based and comfortable with regular travel throughout the area.

The starting salary will be £45,492 until the training is successfully completed.

Ideal Candidate
  • The ideal candidate for this role will be an excellent communicator with a proven track record of managing teams, and will be experienced in being an escalation point for both the team and external customers.
  • Experience within a safety-critical and/or regulated industry and be able to demonstrate sound judgement.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and use data to identify trends, understand performance, prioritise activity and make evidence-based decisions.
  • The ability to develop a good understanding of Health and Safety legislation, Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002 and Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
  • Organised, good time management, the ability to juggle multiple jobs with different complexities and guarantee standards often at the same time, with strong problem solving and the ability to think and plan ahead
  • Good communicator with the presence to build strong relationships with our customers
  • An understanding of and the ability to effectively manage performance
  • Knowledge of craft roles or the ability/willingness to quickly develop your understanding of these roles and the work activities in your team
  • Experience of working in high-risk, operational industries where health and safety is paramount, ideally.
  • A NRSWA qualification or understanding of NRSWA legislation is desirable but full training can be provided.
