Job summary

Academic Appointments Ltd is seeking a SEND Teaching Assistant to support children with special educational needs within various educational settings across Yorkshire. You will provide one-to-one and small-group support to help pupils gain confidence and achieve learning goals.

The role requires patience, empathy, and the ability to adapt to individual pupil needs; prior SEND experience is preferred and DBS clearance is required. Two references and right-to-work in the UK are necessary.

Qualifications

  • Right-to-work in the UK is required.
  • Enhanced DBS certificate or willingness to obtain one.
  • Team Teach Positive, MAPA or equivalent training is desirable but not essential.

Job description

As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will make a real difference to the lives of children with special educational needs and disabilities by providing personalised one-to-one and small-group support. Your guidance and encouragement will help pupils build confidence, overcome barriers to learning, and reach their full potential both academically and personally.

A successful candidate would:
  • Have previous experience working within a range of educational environments, including mainstream schools, specialist settings, or alternative provisions.
  • Be experienced in supporting children and young people with a variety of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including those with behavioural, communication, and additional learning needs.
  • Be a compassionate, patient, and approachable individual who can develop positive, trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Display resilience, adaptability, and a positive attitude, with the ability to respond proactively to the individual needs of pupils and support their ongoing learning and personal development.

You will:
  • Provide consistent encouragement and positive reinforcement to promote confidence, independence, and engagement in learning.
  • Support pupils with their academic, social, emotional, and communication development.
  • Use positive behaviour management strategies to encourage appropriate behaviours and create a safe, inclusive learning environment.
  • Work closely with teachers and other professionals to implement individual support plans and meet pupils' specific needs.
