Job summary

Shirwell Community Primary School is seeking a committed Teaching Assistant for a fixed-term role. The post is 14.37 hours per week, 39 weeks per year, pro-rata, NJC Grade C salary £26,847 - £27,274 FTE until 31 August 2027.

You will support learning in class and small groups, deliver literacy and numeracy interventions, help prepare resources, and promote pupil wellbeing. An enhanced DBS is required; closing date 15 October 2026; right to work in the UK essential.

Shirwell Community Primary School are seeking a committed and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant to join our school team. You will play a key role in supporting pupils' learning, wellbeing and development, helping to create a positive, inclusive and engaging school environment.

About the Role

Working under the guidance of teaching and senior staff, you will support learning in both the classroom and small‑group settings.

  • Supporting pupils' welfare and personal care, including those with SEND
  • Implementing literacy and numeracy interventions
  • Assisting with planning cycles and preparing learning resources
  • Promoting positive behaviour and encouraging pupil independence

You will also assist with supervision during break/lunchtimes and accompany pupils on trips when required.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who can bring compassion and commitment to the role.

Essential qualities include:
  • Experience working with or caring for children of a relevant age
  • Knowledge of safeguarding practice and strategies to remove barriers to learning
  • Strong communication skills, including confidence and fluency in spoken English
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to relate well to both children and adults
Desirable (but not essential):
  • Experience supporting pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
  • Knowledge of SEN practices and the national curriculum
  • Additional training in learning strategies such as literacy or numeracy
  • NVQ Level 2 for Teaching Assistants or equivalent
