Job summary

SMART Education Recruitment is seeking a proactive Teaching Assistant to support primary pupils in a West Bromwich school. You will assist the class teacher, provide 1:1 and small-group support, and help pupils engage with literacy and numeracy tasks.

This full-time, long-term role runs during school hours with PAYE or Umbrella pay, starting in October 2026. Strong communication and patient approach are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • Previous school-based Teaching Assistant experience essential.
  • Minimum of 6 months in an education setting.
  • Experience with primary-aged children.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
  • References covering the last 24 months required.
  • SEND or 1:1 support experience beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Support teachers in delivering engaging lessons and activities.
  • Offer 1:1 and small-group support, including SEND pupils.
  • Adapt resources and activities to match individual pupil needs.
  • Encourage positive behaviour, independence and social skills.
  • Help with literacy and numeracy across the curriculum.
  • Monitor progress and provide feedback to teachers.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures and contribute to a safe classroom.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will provide classroom support across the primary age range, working both alongside the class teacher and with pupils on a 1:1 or small group basis. You ll play an important part in creating a positive learning environment, helping pupils engage with their lessons, and supporting those with additional needs to make progress.

Skills and Experience

  • Confident supporting individuals, groups, and whole-class tasks
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patient, proactive and positive approach
  • Strong ability to build relationships with pupils and staff
  • Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one
  • References covering the last 24 months required
Location and Package
  • Based in West Bromwich
  • Full-time hours: Monday to Friday during school hours
  • Contract role, with all pay rates via PAYE or Umbrella
