Job summary

Novus is recruiting an ESOL Teacher to join our prison education team at HMP Hewell, Redditch. This is a part-time, permanent role delivering 13 hours per week across Monday and Friday, with pro rata salary and pension benefits.

You will plan and deliver ESOL lessons focused on practical language use for daily life, training and work contexts, helping learners build confidence and employability. DBS checks apply.

Qualifications

• Hold a teaching qualification and a relevant subject specialist qualification - or commit to obtain one outstanding qualification within 12 months.
• Hold a recognised ESOL qualification (Desirable).
• Demonstrate understanding of ESOL teaching approaches and adapt learning for learners from different language backgrounds.
• Hold a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.
• Understand or have experience creating stimulating learning environments.
• Demonstrate ability to meet quality targets and work well in a team.
• Engage with and produce accurate reports when required.
• Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Motivate and enthuse learners in ESOL.
• Show good organisational skills to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.

We have a fantastic opportunity available to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Hewell, working as an ESOL Teacher within our prison education team. This position is offered on a permanent, part-time basis, working 13 hours per week (Monday: 8 hours, Friday: 5 hours)

Site Information

Situated in the village of Tardebigge, near Redditch in Worcestershire, England, HMP Hewell is a Category B men's prison serving the West Midlands area. It offers a range of training and development programs, including vocational workshops, educational courses, and initiatives focused on resettlement and family support.

Role Responsibilities

In this role, you will deliver engaging, accessible and high-quality ESOL lessons which support learners to develop their English language skills for everyday communication, further learning and future employment. You will play a key part in building learners' confidence, independence and ability to communicate effectively within a prison education setting.

You will:

• Plan and deliver high-quality ESOL teaching sessions which are accessible, engaging and tailored to learners’ language needs and abilities.
• Support learners to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, with a focus on practical language use in real-life and workplace contexts.
• Assess learner progress, provide constructive feedback and maintain accurate records in line with quality requirements.
• Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that motivates learners and supports achievement.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues to promote progression, employability and positive learner outcomes.
• Use initial assessment and ongoing feedback to identify learners’ strengths, address barriers to learning and support individual progress.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

• Hold a teaching qualification and a relevant subject specialist qualification - or commit to obtain one outstanding qualification within 12 months.
• Hold a recognised ESOL qualification (Desirable).
• Bring a strong understanding of ESOL teaching approaches, with the ability to adapt learning to support speakers of other languages at different levels of confidence, fluency and prior educational experience.
• Hold a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.
• Understand or have experience creating stimulating, vibrant environments which are conducive to learning and motivational for learners.
• Have a good previous track record of achieving quality targets and positive team working.
• Engage with and produce accurate and timely reports when required.
• Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Have an ability to motivate and enthuse learners in the subject matter.
• Demonstrate good organisational skills to prioritise workload and meet deadlines/targets.
