Job summary

Novus is hiring a Functional Skills Teacher at HMP Durham. You will deliver Functional Skills qualifications across English and Maths (50% English and 50% Maths) to learners from Pre-Entry to Level 2. This permanent, full-time role is 37 hours per week and located at Durham.

Join a dedicated team within a prison education provider. The role requires teaching qualification and literacy/numeracy credentials with commitment to learner development and meeting targets.

Qualifications

  • Hold a teaching qualification and, where applicable, relevant subject qualification with a plan to obtain outstanding qualification within 12 months.
  • Hold a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.
  • Demonstrate ability to create stimulating learning environments and meet quality targets.
  • Ability to produce accurate and timely reports.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver Functional Skills qualifications across English and Maths (50% English, 50% Maths).
  • Support learners from Pre-Entry Level to Level 2.

We have an exciting opportunity to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Durham, as a Functional Skills Teacher. In this role, you will deliver Functional Skills qualifications across both English and Maths (50% English and 50% Maths), supporting learners from Pre-Entry Level through to Level 2. This is a permanent, full-time position, working 37 hours per week.

HMP Durham is a Category B men's prison located in Durham, England. The team's aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe and where causes of prison stress are minimised. The prison’s mission is to provide a secure, safe, and rehabilitative environment that encourages positive change and prepares inmates for a successful reintegration into society.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

  • Hold a teaching qualification and where applicable, relevant subject specialist qualification - with a commitment to obtain the outstanding qualification within 12 months
  • Hold a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy
  • Have experience in creating stimulating, vibrant environments which are conducive to learning and motivational for learners
  • Have previous track record showing achievement of quality targets
  • Have successfully produced accurate and timely reports
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Can motivate and enthuse learners
  • Have organisational skills to prioritise workload to meet deadlines and targets
  • Demonstrate positive team working
