Job summary

Novus is seeking a Functional Skills Curriculum Manager to lead the planning, delivery and continuous improvement of the Maths and English curriculum at HMP Liverpool. You will support the Functional Skills team, monitor learner progress and drive standards through QA processes.

Role is permanent, full-time (37 hours/week) with a start planned for 1 January 2027; DBS and prison vetting will be completed before start.

We have a great opportunity available to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Liverpool , working as a Functional Skills Curriculum Manager . This role is offered on a permanent, full-time basis, working 37 hours per week. Please note that we are working towards a start date of 1 st January 2027, pending completion of DBS and prison vetting processes.

Site Information

HMP Liverpool is a Category B Male prison based in Walton, Liverpool. The prison itself has a strong local identity. Upon arrival, large murals illustrate the city and its surroundings. The teams' aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe, and where causes of prison stress are minimised. The prison's mission is to provide a secure, safe, and rehabilitative environment that encourages positive change and prepares inmates for a successful reintegration into society.

Role Responsibilities

As Functional Skills Curriculum Manager, you will lead the planning, delivery and continuous improvement of the Functional Skills curriculum, ensuring high-quality teaching, learning and assessment across Maths and English provision. You will support and develop the Functional Skills team, monitor learner progress and outcomes, and use quality assurance processes to drive standards, meet targets and improve the learner experience.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

• Hold a Teaching qualification - minimum Cert Ed or PGCE
• Hold a degree or equivalent (including equivalent life / career experience)
• Hold at least a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy
• Have experience of implementing continuous quality assurance procedures
• Have a track record of successful partnership working
• Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrate an ability to motivate and enthuse teams
• Have excellent organisational skills to prioritise workload, and meet challenging deadlines and targets
• Have experience of analysing trends and identifying impact on curriculum
• Have good IT Skills
• Have experience or proven ability to deliver Functional Skills Maths and English to Level 2
• Be able to demonstrate an ability to effectively manage a Functional Skills Team
