Job summary

Novus, the LTE Group prison education provider, is seeking a part-time Functional Skills Maths Teacher at HMP Hewell, Redditch. You will deliver engaging maths lessons and support learners to improve numeracy for everyday life, further learning and employment.

The role involves 12 hours per week, with Thursday 8am-5pm and Friday 8am-12pm, in a supportive prison education setting. A teaching qualification and maths specialist qualification are preferred, with DBS checks in place.

Qualifications

• Hold a teaching qualification and a comparable subject specialist qualification within 12 months if not held.
• Desirable to hold a recognised maths subject specialist qualification.
• Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy required.
• Ability to create stimulating learning environments for learners.
• Track record of achieving quality targets and teamwork.
• Ability to motivate and enthuse learners in maths.
• Good organisational skills to manage workload and deadlines.

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Functional Skills Maths Teacher to deliver engaging and accessible maths lessons within a prison education setting. In this rewarding role, you will support learners to improve their numeracy skills, overcome barriers to learning and progress towards positive outcomes.

We have a fantastic opportunity available to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Hewell, working as a Functional Skills Maths Teacher on a permanent, part-time basis (12 hours per week). Working pattern includes Thursday from 8am-5pm and Friday from 8am-12pm.

Situated in the village of Tardebigge, near Redditch in Worcestershire, England, HMP Hewell is a Category B men’s prison serving the West Midlands area. It offers a range of training and development programs, including vocational workshops, educational courses, and initiatives focused on resettlement and family support.

Role Responsibilities

In this role, you will deliver engaging, accessible and high-quality Functional Skills Maths lessons which support learners to develop confidence with numeracy, problem-solving and practical maths skills for everyday life, further learning and future employment. You will play a key part in helping learners overcome barriers to maths, build independence and achieve recognised qualifications within a prison education setting.

You will:

• Plan and deliver high-quality Functional Skills Maths teaching sessions which are accessible, engaging and tailored to learners’ numeracy needs and abilities.
• Support learners to develop practical maths skills, including number, measure, shape, data handling and problem-solving, with a focus on real-life and workplace contexts.
• Assess learner progress, provide constructive feedback and maintain accurate records in line with quality requirements.
• Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that motivates learners and supports achievement.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues to promote progression, employability and positive learner outcomes.
• Use initial assessment and ongoing feedback to identify learners’ strengths, address barriers to learning and support individual progress.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

• Hold a teaching qualification and a relevant subject specialist qualification - or commit to obtain one outstanding qualification within 12 months.
• Hold a recognised maths subject specialist qualification (Desirable).
• Bring a strong understanding of Functional Skills Maths teaching approaches, with the ability to adapt learning to support learners at different levels of confidence, ability and prior educational experience.
• Hold a minimum of Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.
• Understand or have experience creating stimulating, vibrant environments which are conducive to learning and motivational for learners.
• Have a good previous track record of achieving quality targets and positive team working.
• Engage with and produce accurate and timely reports when required.
• Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Have an ability to motivate and enthuse learners in the subject matter.
• Demonstrate good organisational skills to prioritise workload and meet deadlines/targets.
