Job description

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

NHS Tayside is seeking to recruit a Systems Support Specialist to join the Clinical Engineering Service, supporting the safe, effective and resilient operation of clinical and technical digital systems across the organisation. The post is based within Medical Physics at Ninewells Hospital, and forms part of the specialist support arrangements for NHS Tayside’s increasingly complex estate of connected medical equipment.

This is a key operational role providing systems implementation, technical services and application support across a wide range of NHS Tayside systems. The post holder will support areas including computer operations, database administration, hardware and software installation, network administration, system support, user support, backup and recovery, disaster recovery and business continuity.

The Systems Support Specialist will provide day-to-day administration, maintenance and technical support for NHS Tayside's networked medical equipment and supporting systems, ensuring the availability, security and resilience to support clinical and business services. The successful candidate will provide specialist technical support for network-connected medical devices, clinical systems, infrastructure, software, firmware and associated digital platforms, supporting the connectivity, integration, deployment, maintenance and troubleshooting of technologies that increasingly rely on secure digital infrastructure, clinical networks, asset management systems and wider NHS Tayside digital services. The role will support network, server and desktop environments, respond to technical incidents and service requests, contribute to cybersecurity, software and firmware management, technical procurement, project delivery, business continuity planning and incident management, and work closely with clinical technologist teams, Digital Directorate colleagues, clinical users and external suppliers to resolve complex issues and support service delivery. The post is particularly important in supporting critical services including radiotherapy systems, integrated patient monitoring, ECG services across Tayside, patient vital signs monitoring, locally managed digital networks, the medical asset database, quality management systems and staff planning systems, helping to ensure the safe, effective and reliable operation of digitally enabled healthcare services across NHS Tayside.

Applicants should have degree-level or equivalent knowledge, an understanding of data networking and operating system technologies, and considerable prior experience in a technical environment. The post requires strong communication skills, good organisational ability, experience of working within project environments and the ability to provide reliable, customer-focused technical support.

The successful candidate will be able to prioritise a complex workload, analyse and resolve technical faults, communicate complex technical information clearly to non-technical users, and work collaboratively with clinical, technical and supplier teams. The post holder must also be able to assess emerging technologies, identify risks, support service improvement, and contribute to secure, cost-effective and resilient system solutions.

Hours of work are:36.0. Flexibility in working hours is expected for service provision, as is the requirement to take part in the Clinical Engineering on-call arrangements.

You will be required to achieve the mandatory Induction standards for Healthcare Support Workers in Scotland and to comply with the Code of Conduct throughout your employment.
