Job description

Background

The Sustainable Research Team and Biosciences Education Team have received funding from the Education for Sustainability team to collaborate on developing resources that embed sustainability into the bioscience undergraduate curricula.

As scientific researchers, we have an ethical responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of our work. Laboratories consume significantly more energy per square foot than office spaces, and biological and medical research contribute to global plastic waste. Currently, bioscience students at King's College London (KCL) have limited exposure to sustainable practices until advanced in their studies or careers. Integrating sustainability into the curriculum from the start will equip students with essential skills for sustainable research practices.

Role Overview

Part of this project budget is allocated to hire a Sustainability in Education Research Assistant to support key tasks up to 8 hours per week. Please ensure you have your supervisor's support, as working hours are typically Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm.

Responsibilities
  1. Write a systematic literature review on how sustainability has been integrated into other universities.
  2. Organise and host an away day with module and programme leads, technical staff, and stakeholders to identify where to embed new content and analyse outcomes.
  3. Develop initial resources for years 1, 2, and 3 and gather student feedback on content and delivery.
  4. Organise and host a final workshop demonstrating the use of new resources with academic and technical staff.
  5. Coordinate with the project lead, Dr Marcelo Salierno, the Sustainability Innovation Lead (Research).
