Job summary

Barking & Dagenham College is seeking a Student Liaison Officer to support learners and promote a safe, welcoming learning environment. You will work across student welfare, monitor behaviour, and respond to incidents professionally, acting as a College ambassador.

The role requires level 2 English & Maths, safeguarding awareness, and strong interpersonal skills. The position is full-time, 36 hours per week, term-time only, with shifts including day and evening hours.

Qualifications

  • English and Maths qualifications at level 2 or above.
  • Designated Safeguarding Lead qualification (willing to obtain).
  • Behaviour management/de-escalation experience or relevant qualification.
  • Understanding of Child and Vulnerable Adult protection and safeguarding.

Responsibilities

  • Promote positive behaviour and be a role model for students.
  • De-escalate confrontational situations professionally.
  • Monitor common areas to support expected behaviour.
  • Intervene with students outside timetabled lessons as needed.
  • Supervise breaks and support staff in encouraging attendance and punctuality.

We are seeking a Student Liaison Officer to join our Student Welfare & Support team on a full- time 36 hours per week, term-time only basis.

Our Student Welfare & Support provision plays a vital role in empowering students within our community to build confidence and make progress into employment, access higher-level study and support their families and communities.

What You'll Be Doing

Reporting to the Student Liaison Manager, the Student Liaison Officer will provide a positive role model to students and promote good behaviour by engaging with students and staff and responding in a professional manner to de-escalate confrontational situations which may occur in the College from time to time. Acting as a College ambassador at all times the Student Liaison Officer will ensure a safe, secure and welcoming learning environment for staff, students and visitors, liaising with individuals and teams within the College, agencies and community group.

You will:

  • Work on a daytime and evening shift - as directed by your Student Liaison Manager
  • Be an integral part of the cross-college student services and support Team monitoring student behaviour, intervening and managing behaviour when appropriate
  • Monitoring the common areas of the College property to support and maintain expected behaviour.
  • Identify and challenge student behaviour deemed outside college expectations in a non-confrontational manner.
  • Undertake regular routine student liaison checks of all internal and external areas identifying students who may not be in their timetabled lessons
  • Supervise students at break times, ensuring students are respectful of their surroundings, staff and of each other.
  • Assist all staff in encouraging the continually positive behaviour, punctuality and attendance of all students
What We're Looking For

You should have:

  • English and Maths qualifications at level 2 or above
  • Have,or be willing to take, the Designated Safeguarding Lead qualification
  • Behaviour management, de-escalation and/or relevant qualification that supports student safety aims, is desireable.
  • Understanding of Child and Vulnerable Adult protection (Safeguarding Agenda) and the willingness to increase knowledge
In addition, you will demonstrate:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff and external agencies
  • Experience of providing support, advice or guidance ideally within an education, student services or customer facing environment
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate records and meet deadlines
  • Ability to identify and respond appropriately to student concerns, including knowing when issues should be escalated or referred to other support services
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a wider team, demonstrating a flexible and proactive approach
  • Commitment to delivering an inclusive, student focused service, with an understanding of confidently, equality, diversity and professional boundaries
