Job summary

Qualifications

  • Right to work in the UK and enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain).

Responsibilities

  • Supporting students on a 1:1 and small-group basis.
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with young people.
  • Helping pupils manage their emotions and behaviours positively.
  • Promoting engagement in lessons and educational activities.
  • Managing and de-escalating challenging behaviours using positive intervention strategies.
  • Maintaining accurate records of pupil progress and wellbeing.

Teaching Personnel are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and motivated Student Engagement & Behaviour Mentor to join a specialist alternative provision in the Bolton area.

This setting supports students aged 11-16 who require additional support to access education successfully. Many pupils have a diagnosis or presentation of SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs), Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, attachment difficulties, trauma-related behaviours, anxiety, emotional regulation challenges, and other complex barriers to learning.

The provision takes a personalised approach to education, offering small class sizes, specialist support, and a highly nurturing environment where students are encouraged to rebuild their confidence, develop life skills, and achieve meaningful outcomes. Staff work closely together to create a safe and consistent environment where every young person is given the opportunity to succeed.

The Role

As a Student Engagement & Behaviour Mentor, you will be a positive role model for students who may have experienced challenges both in education and in their personal lives. Your role will focus on helping young people regulate their emotions, engage in learning, and develop the social skills needed to thrive in school and beyond.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supporting students on a 1:1 and small-group basis.
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with young people.
  • Helping pupils manage their emotions and behaviours positively.
  • Promoting engagement in lessons and educational activities.
  • Supporting students during transitions, breaktimes, and vocational sessions.
  • Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff to implement behaviour support plans.
  • Encouraging attendance, participation, and personal development.
  • Managing and de-escalating challenging behaviours using positive intervention strategies.
  • Maintaining accurate records of pupil progress and wellbeing.
What We're Looking For
  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, SEND, behavioural needs, or additional vulnerabilities.
  • Backgrounds in youth work, mentoring, residential care, coaching, education, support work, or similar environments are highly desirable.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach.
  • Ability to remain professional in challenging situations.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice or restorative approaches is advantageous.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
  • Right to work in the UK.
