Job summary

South Gloucestershire Council is hiring for street cleansing operatives to keep public spaces clean, safe and attractive for residents, businesses and visitors. You will join a dedicated team, performing litter collection, cleansing of public spaces and removal of bulky waste outdoors in all weather.

Working outside, you may walk long distances, handle bulky waste, and comply with health and safety guidelines.

Qualifications

• Must have full driving licence (category B) for manual transmission vehicles.
• Ability to read and follow written works instructions, read maps and complete paper records.
• Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather, with extensive walking and manual handling tasks.

Responsibilities

• Carry out street cleansing duties: collect litter, clear spaces and remove bulky waste.
• Work outdoors on verges, footpaths, roads, and other environments; assist in waste removal, weed control and graffiti removal.
• May work on high-speed roads and in hazardous environments; adhere to health and safety guidelines and legislation.
• Weekend and night shifts may be involved with enhanced pay where applicable.

How you'll make a difference

As part of a vital frontline service, you will play an important role in helping to keep South Gloucestershire a clean, safe and attractive for residents, businesses and visitors. Working as part of a dedicated team, you will carry out a range of street cleansing duties, including litter collection cleansing of public spaces and the removal of bulky waste.

Working outdoors in all weather conditions, you will maintain public areas to help improve the local environment and community wellbeing.

What you will be doing

• Carrying out street cleansing duties, you will be responsible for collecting litter, clearing spaces of land and removing bulky waste.
• Working outside in all weathers on verges, footpaths, roadways and other outdoor environments, you will assist in the removal of waste, control weed growth and remove graffiti.
• You may be working on high-speed roads and occasionally working in unpleasant and hazardous environments.
• To ensure your health and safety, you will adhere to strict guidelines complying with all appropriate legislation, including instructions relating to waste disposal in force at that time.
• Depending on duties, weekend and night-time work may be involved, for which the appropriate enhancement will be paid.

What we need from you

• You must have a full driving licence to at least category B for manual transmission vehicles and you will need to be competent to drive vehicles up to maximum 3500kg MAM.
• Given the elements of the role, you need to be physically fit and able to work outdoors in weather through the year – this job involves extensive walking and frequent manual handling tasks.
• You will have the ability to read and follow written works instructions, read maps and complete paper records.
