Job summary

Novax Recruitment Group seeks a Quantity Surveyor specializing in structural steelwork in Newport. You will own the commercial aspects from early stages to final account, ensuring budgets, contracts, and cash flow are managed effectively.

You will interpret drawings and specifications, manage variations, and negotiate with clients and subcontractors while building strong project-team relationships. This role emphasizes the commercial lifecycle across steel projects.

Qualifications

• Experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Surveyor within structural steelwork, steel fabrication, steel erection or a closely related environment.
• A sound understanding of construction contracts, valuations and final accounts.
• Experience managing project costs, budgets, forecasts and commercial reporting.
• The ability to interpret drawings, specifications and scopes of work.
• Confidence negotiating with clients, main contractors and subcontractors.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with project teams.
• A relevant Quantity Surveying qualification or equivalent industry experience.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of the commercial side of structural steel projects, following the money from the early stages through to final account.
• Commercial control: Monitor project budgets, costs, cash flow and profitability, identifying issues before they affect the bottom line.
• Contract management: Review contract terms, understand the risks and make sure commercial obligations are met.
• Cost reporting: Prepare cost-value reconciliations, forecasts and financial reports that give the project team a clear picture of performance.
• Variations and valuations: Identify changes to the original scope, price additional works and make sure the value of work completed is properly recovered.
• Payments and applications: Manage applications for payment, valuations and outstanding payments to maintain cash flow.
• Subcontractor accounts: Help procure subcontract packages, assess applications and manage payments through to settlement.
• Final accounts: Negotiate and agree final accounts with clients, main contractors and subcontractors.
• Team collaboration: Work alongside Project Managers, estimators, designers and operational teams to keep projects commercially on track.
