Job description

Our team of stewards play a vital role in the smooth and efficient operations of the hospice, including routinely dealing with death and dying (such as transporting deceased bodies to and from our mortuary, supporting family viewings, and liaising with funeral directors). Your role will often involve supporting patients upon their arrival at the hospice, ensuring they are safely escorted to our Inpatient Unit (IPU).

Salary: £29,201 per annum

Hours/Tenure: 36 hours per week on a rota basis (Permanent)

(Monday to Sunday on a rota basis, including some Bank Holiday working and Christmas Day)

Celebrating over 50 years and with a turnover of over £20 million, we provide invaluable care to over 6,000 people across the London Boroughs of Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham, and Southwark.

Your new role

This is an exciting opportunity to work within our busy Steward department.

Our stewards play a vital role in the smooth and efficient operations of the hospice, including dealing with death and dying (transporting bodies, supporting viewings, liaising with funeral directors). You will also support patients arriving at the hospice and escort them to the IPU, transport equipment, respond to patient needs, assist with garden visits, handle requests from departments, and support building security. Additionally, the role involves picking up and dropping off patients for appointments.

To succeed in this role

A desirable candidate will be:

  • Motivated and compassionate with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiastic and flexible regarding hours and duties
  • Knowledgeable of health & safety and security procedures, including locking up and alarm systems (Essential)
  • Hold a full Driver License and be insurable to drive patients, with categories C1 / D1 (Essential)

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Hold the MiDAS (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme) certificate or willingness to undertake training within the first 6 months
  • Full Driving Licence and insurable to drive patients (category C1/D1)
Experience
  • Experience in risk assessments and safety procedures
  • Experience in providing patient transport, ideally within community transport services
Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This position requires a DBS check, as part of compliance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975.
