Job summary

STERIS Instrument Management Services (IMS) in London is seeking a Decontamination Operative to support sterile processing, including decontamination, inspection, packing and traceability of theatre instruments. No prior experience is required as full training is provided in a fast-paced, detail-focused environment.

The role operates on a twilight shift 14:00–22:00, five days a week (including weekends) with initial training of up to 12 weeks; standard end-to-end processing duties are expected

Qualifications

  • Educated to a good general standard with demonstrable verbal and numerical abilities.
  • No experience required; full training and support provided to reach full potential.
  • Desirable experience in Sterile Services or health-related products.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare sterile consumables by decontamination, inspection, assembly and packing to standards.
  • Inspect, wash, lay-up and pack theatre instrument sets per contract specifications.
  • Operate and monitor washers, disinfectors, ultrasonic and sterilisation equipment.
  • Record repairs or missing instruments on the tracking system and ensure proper stock return.
  • Disassemble, decontaminate, package and sterilise instruments; work in a fast-paced environment.

Job description

  • To ensure the effective preparation of sterile consumables (dressings, linen, instruments and equipment) by the process of decontamination, inspection assembly and packing within predefined quality standards.
  • To rigorously check, wash, lay-up and pack sets of theatre instruments to meet contract specifications within predefined quality standards.
  • To safely operate and monitor machines and equipment (washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic and sterilisers) effectively.
  • To ensure that repairs and missing instruments or equipment are recorded and logged on the Tracking and Traceability computer system (SynergyTrak).
  • To ensure that repaired instruments or equipment are returned to stock or the appropriate coded sets or the Trust's appointed person.
  • The post requires manual dexterity and the ability to use complex equipment, for example, this role involves disassembly, inspection, decontamination, packaging and sterilisation of surgical instrumentation to predetermined standards. The decontamination and sterilisation processes are carried out using complex processing units This role will involve working in a fast-paced environment, where quality and precision is vital. No experience is required, full training and support are provided in a programme to help staff to reach their full potential, learning a wide range of hospital instruments and working in different functional areas of the sterilisation process. shift: twilight shift working 14:00-22:00 5 days a week including weekends Initial training 08:00-16:00 for up to 12 weeks, Educated to a good general standard with demonstrable verbal and numerical abilities.
  • Basic end user IT skills to operate track and traceability IT system.
Preferred Experience
  • TVQ or NVQ Level 2 in Decontamination or equivalent experience.
