Job summary

Illumina, Inc. is seeking a Staff Systems Support Engineer to join the Global Lab Management team. You will support developments in sequencing technologies, ensuring instrument fleets are reliable and capable of sustaining critical R&D activities.

You will troubleshoot hardware, firmware, and software, mentor teammates, and collaborate with global groups to drive upgrades. You will engage with R&D teams across the globe, analyze performance data, and contribute to manufacturing-ready solutions

Qualifications

• Significant experience supporting complex opto-electronic systems in a commercial or R&D environment.
• Strong troubleshooting capability across integrated hardware, firmware, and software systems.
• Coding experience and hands-on experience working with Linux operating systems.
• Experience troubleshooting and diagnosing PCB-level issues.
• Strong communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot and resolve issues on sequencing instruments to support R&D activities.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure instruments are fit for purpose and implement hardware/software modifications.
• Monitor instrument performance through data analysis and perform preventive maintenance and upgrades.
• Partner with EERD and Systems Integration teams to maintain fleet availability.
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior team members.
• Develop and communicate key performance metrics, including failure analysis and Pareto reporting.
• Provide timely communication to users regarding investigations and repair timelines.
• Collaborate with global teams to support software, firmware, and hardware upgrades.
• Represent engineering support on project teams requiring sequencing instrument expertise.
