Job summary

IonQ, based in Oxford, UK, is seeking a senior Systems Software Engineer to join the Runtime Software team. You will work closely with experimental scientists to implement real-time control system behaviours and abstractions, enabling precise nano-second operations and scalable, fault-tolerant computation on quantum hardware.

You will help shape core Rust libraries and the execution environment that transforms a hardware collection into a functioning quantum computer, supporting rapid iteration

Qualifications

• Strong programming skills in one or more mainstream languages.
• Experience with systems programming.
• Experience with real-time Linux or embedded systems or other low-latency environments.
• Interest in or experience with Rust.
• Excellent communication skills across software and disciplines.
• Comfort with evolving requirements and fast iteration.
• Commitment to high-quality code and testing.

Responsibilities

• Develop abstractions over real-time control hardware for precise, repeatable ions control.
• Contribute to core execution model and Rust libraries for quantum systems.
• Collaborate with scientists and other teams to align requirements with architecture.
• Interface with FPGA/electronics and system orchestration teams for integration.
• Implement drivers for various real-time devices and build tooling for rapid iteration.
• Develop the execution environment for user programs running on our systems.
