Job summary

IonQ Oxford is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the non-realtime controllers team. You will own device controllers end to end, focusing on robust, observable software that coordinates with our quantum hardware stack across a hybrid Oxford site.

Ideal candidates have strong Rust or systems programming background, experience in distributed services (gRPC/REST), and a passion for reliability in hardware interfaces. Collaboration with scientists and systems teams is essential.

Qualifications

• Experience with Linux-based systems and hardware interfacing.
• Ability to own a problem area with minimal supervision.
• Experience with asynchronous programming (async).

Responsibilities

• Own a group of device controllers end to end, API design and operational health.
• Make services robust against failures of real instruments.
• Bring devices onto the current framework and roll out fleet-wide.
• Improve the shared framework for common problems across controllers.
• Collaborate with systems teams and scientists, enhance observability and alerting.
• Mentor newer engineers and raise coding standards.
