Job description

We are seeking a Registered Nurse who has full ophthalmic training and a relevant ophthalmic qualification. You must have experience of working in a high‑volume healthcare environment.

Previous experience in an Ophthalmology outpatient setting is essential.

Responsibilities
  • The postholder will be responsible and accountable for the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care.
  • Work as a member of the multi‑disciplinary team and undertake delegated tasks from the Nurse Manager.
  • The postholder will be required at times to take charge of department for a span of duty.
  • The postholder will always work within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Visual assessment, ophthalmic investigations, treatment and triage of patients attending the department i.e.: IOP, RAPD, sac washout, subconjunctival injections, removal of sutures, contact lens education.
  • Preparation of patients undergoing ophthalmic investigations, including requesting of relevant investigations, surgical procedures.
  • Admission and discharge of patients to Ward/Department.
  • To run and organise, where applicable in the ophthalmic clinic, to assist in ophthalmic procedures.
  • Participates in maintaining a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for all patients and carers and maintain agreed standards of nursing care.
  • Determines nursing priorities and plans patient care. Informs the nurse in charge when changes in circumstances may affect patient care.
  • Maintain nursing records in accordance with the NMC and Trust guidelines.
  • Maintain and improve quality of patient care through contribution to the development of Essence of Care and clinical benchmarking within the unit.
  • Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients.
  • Providing information and support to patients/carers, and ensuring all those involved in the care are aware of changes in the patients’ condition.
  • Assist in the safe custody, checking and administration of drugs.
  • To develop the clinical knowledge and skills to care for acutely ill patients admitted via both planned and unplanned routes.
  • To undertake expanded practice, under supervision, in order to optimise patient care and in accordance with ward/department and Trust policies.
  • Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of care.
  • Ensure effective lines of communication within the ward/department multidisciplinary team.
  • Assisting the department manager in identifying required resources to enable nursing staff to provide agreed standards of patient care.
  • Collaborates with other professional groups to ensure safe and effective care is made available on the department.
  • Works in line with and promotes government and hospital strategies, ensuring nursing staff meet their responsibilities and are working to the aims and objectives of the organisation.
