Staff Chief Engineer for Mitsui Ocean Cruises

Description

We are looking for an experienced Staff Chief Engineer to join cruise vessel MISTUI OCEAN FUJI, embarkation 24/January/2026. The contract is 3 months on/off. Candidates must have all valid certificates, good references/recommendations, and extensive experience as a Staff Engineer.

Position Summary
  1. Assists the Chief Engineer in all technical, mechanical, electrical and environmental matters.
  2. Ensures that all systems and equipment of every subdivision of the technical department are operating correctly and are maintained to the highest possible standards to support safe navigation, complying with company policies, national or international standards and public health regulations.
  3. Ensures proper coordination and cooperation with different technical parties and departments.
Reporting Structure
  1. Reporting to the Chief Engineer.
  2. Subordinates – Engine Officers and ratings.
Safety Duties
  1. Participates in crew safety drills as instructed.
  2. Must always comply with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
  3. Leads by example by caring for Health and Safety of self and others.
  4. Ensures correct use of work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices. Provides training, guidance and supervision as needed.
Education / Experience / Qualifications
  1. Valid STCW95 certification.
  2. Valid CoC A-III/2.
  3. Appropriate certification as required by regulations.
  4. Extensive experience as a Staff Engineer is essential.
  5. Strong ability to detect and identify the cause of machinery faults.
  6. Physically and medically fit.
  7. Moral integrity required.
  8. Public Health, Sanitation and Environmental training courses.
  9. Alaska experience is a plus.
  10. Public Health, Coast Guard and Port State Control experience.
Language Requirements

Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. Additional languages are considered beneficial.

Computer Knowledge

Good knowledge of AMOS and Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Requires standing, walking long distances, reaching, and sitting. Includes repetitive motion, climbing ladders, lifting or pushing up to 50 lbs. Overtime work and irregular schedules are expected. Work environment includes Engine Control Room, Engine spaces with noise, light traffic, distracting environments, and office settings.

    1. Main propulsion machinery and associated equipment.
    2. Diesel Generators and associated machinery.
    3. Black and Grey water system.
    4. Boilers and steam plant.
    5. Oily water separator.
    6. Separators.
    7. Compressors.
    8. Evaporators.
    9. Deck machinery.
    10. Garbage management equipment.
    11. Life Boats and Tender Engines and propulsion system.
    12. Chlorine dosing equipment for fresh water and potable water system.
    13. Emergency D/Generator maintenance and test.
    14. Dead Ship Recovery Generator (CLIA) maintenance and test.
    15. Water Tight Doors and Semi‑Watertight Doors hydraulic system.
    16. Fire sliding door pneumatic system.
    17. Fire Extinguishing Water pipeline and valves.
    18. Incinerator, food waste and garbage equipment system.
    19. Swimming pool and Jacuzzi machinery.
    20. Mechanical hotel equipment and services, plumbing etc.
    21. Air conditioning.
    22. Thrusters.
    23. Stabilisers.
    24. Emergency diesel engines and related equipment.
    25. Steering and rudder machinery, whistles and bilge cleanliness.
    26. Fresh/sea water and potable water distribution services.
  4. Must be fully knowledgeable of the Chief Engineer’s responsibilities and must be able to assume the role if needed.
  5. Ensures maintenance programs are implemented and followed timely according to company policy.
  6. Has full knowledge of vessel handling characteristics, safety features, and is conversant with the Company’s VMS.
  7. Familiar with all lifesaving, firefighting and pollution prevention equipment.
  8. Ensures inspections, maintenance and testing of environmental systems comply with company policies and regulations.
  9. Assists the Chief Engineer in overseeing all bunkering operations.
  10. Issues work permits for the engine department.
  11. Monitors training for the engine department.
  12. Responsible for inspections of tanks and compartments.
  13. Attends arrival and departure manoeuvring.
  14. Ensures sufficient stock of spare parts and consumables is on order and in the onboard system.
  15. Works closely with the Safety Officer to maintain proper condition of all safety equipment and systems.
  16. Ensures seaworthiness of the vessel in the engine department.
  17. Maintains readiness to meet any emergency requirements.
  18. Monitors technical performance of the vessel, ensuring safe, effective maintenance and repair procedures.
  19. Oversees and maintains correct and up‑to‑date engine log books and related records.
  20. Assigns duties to engine officers and ratings; assigns technical work on a daily basis.
  21. Ensures all within the department are trained and can carry out their duties.
  22. Ensures engine personnel are trained with alarm systems, especially CO₂ alarm.
  23. Participates in development of on‑board operational plans, coordinating with Hotel Department.
  24. Keeps the Chief Engineer fully informed of all significant problems and matters.
  25. Maintains standards, evaluates performance, implements corrective action.
  26. Controls and approves department overtime and working hours, complying with ILO and MLC work/rest hours.
  27. Executes strict practices to ensure compliance with International Safety Management, ISPS, SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ILO/IMO/ITF/MLC 2006, Ballast Water Management, US CDC Vessel Sanitation Program, and Merchant Shipping Legislation of the Bahamas.
  28. Observes and enforces uniform and grooming standards.
  29. Establishes a climate of openness and trust; practices good people management.
  30. All other duties as assigned.
