Job summary

Wise in London is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer (IC4) to own and shape the architecture of our global KYC and onboarding platform. You’ll lead initiatives across verification services, mentoring engineers, and delivering scalable, secure solutions that support customers worldwide.

You will work in a hybrid setup, collaborating with cross-functional teams to raise engineering standards, automate processes, and ensure reliable production systems across 160+ countries and currencies.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of Java experience (Java 8+) with recent Spring framework knowledge.
• Experience designing scalable, distributed services and high-throughput systems.
• Strong mentoring and coaching abilities for engineers on the team.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain high-performance backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and cloud technologies.
• Lead technical initiatives to improve verification systems' automation, reliability, and performance.
• Collaborate with product managers to translate requirements into technical solutions; mentor engineers.
