We are looking for an anaesthetist with at least two years of NHS experience and obstetric anaesthetic competencies. The post involves two days of elective theatres per week and a 1:12 on‑call commitment. The post‑holder should be able to cover the labour ward out of hours without direct supervision.
Our medium‑sized DGH hosts a range of surgical specialties including orthopaedics, general surgery, urology, obstetrics & gynaecology, ENT, oral surgery, ophthalmic surgery and breast surgery. The anaesthetic offices are located adjacent to the Critial Care Unit.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide anaesthetic services for elective and emergency care according to rota allocation.
- Support training and educational activities within the Trust.
- Support audit, research and service development projects under the guidance of the departmental QI lead.
- Maintain continuous professional learning and development.
Clinical Duties
- Assess patients before surgery, agree an anaesthetic plan and deliver safe anaesthesia with an appropriate level of supervision; provide high‑quality post‑operative analgesia and handover to recovery staff.
- Provide out‑of‑hours cover in CEPOD theatre or labour ward, working with the on‑call team to optimise patient safety.
- Ensure safe and effective prescribing following Trust guidelines.
- Deliver training and education to all staff levels, as directed by senior clinical staff.
Learning & Development
- Keep up to date with current medical practice in anaesthesia, participate in annual appraisal and maintain an CPD plan.
- Contribute to audit, research and quality improvement projects and support teaching of medical students and junior colleagues.
General Responsibilities
- Comply with all Trust policies and procedures, including mandatory training and HR processes.
- Raise concerns and promote Trust values in all activities.
- Be a cooperative member of the anaesthetic team, raising issues with the Clinical Lead as needed.
- Provide additional support to students on placement at the Trust.
Clinical
- Maintain knowledge of safeguarding issues for vulnerable adults and support appropriate action.
- Complete mandatory training on the Mental Capacity Act and Protection of Liberties Safeguards legislation.
- Ensure all clinical activity is evidence‑based, clinically safe and within competence.
- Maintain contemporaneous clinical records and communications for continuity of care.
- Comply with GMC guidance and Good Medical Practice principles; alert the Medical Director of any registration issues.
- Ensure adequate medical indemnity and meet revalidation requirements.
- Develop self‑awareness and value self‑care for professional resilience.

Salary & Contract
£61,542 to £99,216 per annum. Permanent contract, full‑time.

Person Specification
Qualifications (Essential)
- MBBS, MBChB or equivalent.
- Full GMC registration and licence to practice.
- At least 4 years post‑registration experience.
Qualifications (Desirable)
- All or part of Primary FRCA.
Clinical Experience (Essential)
- Equivalent to anaesthetic CT3.
- Ability to cover labour ward out of hours without direct supervision.
- Experience of transfer of critically ill patients within the hospital and inter‑hospital transfers.
Clinical Experience (Desirable)
- Experience in critical care.
Leadership & Management (Essential)
- Appropriate leadership and management experience for level of training.
Teaching & Research (Essential)
