Job description

Join us at Barclays as a Solutions Architect. As a Solutions Architect, you will play a key role in shaping the future of Barclays' digital and API ecosystem. Working across products, channels, and engineering teams, you will define and deliver scalable, secure, and innovative technology solutions that enable exceptional customer experiences and support our strategic objectives. Combining deep technical expertise with strong leadership and stakeholder management skills, you will drive architecture decisions, influence technology direction, and ensure solutions align with enterprise standards and business outcomes.

Essential Skills:

  • Proven experience designing and delivering API-led and integration architectures, including RESTful APIs, OpenAPI standards, event-driven solutions, and secure integration patterns (OAuth, OIDC, CIAM).

  • Strong engineering background with expertise in cloud-native architecture, microservices, containerisation, DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and designing for resilience, performance, and security.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead end-to-end solution architecture across complex programmes, defining target-state architectures, influencing technical direction, and driving architectural decisions across multiple teams and stakeholders.

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with experience partnering with Product, Engineering, and Technology leadership teams.

  • Experience operating within architecture governance frameworks and presenting solutions through architecture review boards and decision forums.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience within Corporate Banking and Payments environments.

  • A strong Product and Platform Architecture mindset, with the ability to balance business outcomes, scalability, and technical excellence.

  • Experience designing and delivering event-driven and real-time architectures within complex enterprise environments.

Purpose of the role

To design, develop, and implement solutions to complex business problems, collaborating with stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements, and design and implement solutions that meet those needs and create solutions that balance technology risks against business delivery, driving consistency.

Accountabilities

  • Design and development of solutions as products that can evolve, meeting business requirements that align with modern software engineering practices and automated delivery tooling. This includes identification and implementation of the technologies and platforms.
  • Targeted design activities that apply an appropriate workload placement strategy and maximise the benefit of cloud capabilities such as elasticity, serverless, containerisation etc.
  • Best practice designs incorporating security principles (such as defence in depth and reduction of blast radius) that meet the Bank’s resiliency expectations.
  • Solutions that appropriately balance risks and controls to deliver the agreed business and technology value.
  • Adoption of standardised solutions where they fit. If no standard solutions fit, feed into their ongoing evolution where appropriate.
  • Fault finding and performance issues support to operational support teams, leveraging available tooling.
  • Solution design impact assessment in terms of risk, capacity and cost impact, inc. estimation of project change and ongoing run costs.
  • Development of the requisite architecture inputs required to comply with the banks governance processes, including design artefacts required for architecture, privacy, security and records management governance processes.
